Running head: Individual Self-Analysis

My history as a leader has evolved from being a front line worker to a

supervisors position. I have a successful leader who believes in succession
planning, building leaders within the organization and has given me
encouragement to develop my leadership skills. I have been provided with
opportunities to build my leadership potential by developing relationships
with positive leaders who already have a well-developed set of leadership
skills. These leaders have committed to mentor and help develop leaders
such as myself resulting in a positive way to sustain effective leadership.
This has been a great learning experience in my life and I feel the
environment at work is encouraging which will support my endeavors of
becoming successful leader.
I have always been the kind of person who is seeking to improve myself. I
jump in and sometimes the decision to step up has been uncomfortable, but
I have taken the opportunities to grow. Having an attitude of trying, failing,
learning from my mistakes and coming back stronger has helped me
succeed. I did not seek out a leadership role but emerged as a leader
because I am a positive person and have a way to direct people to achieve a
goal. I have been led by both good and ineffective leaders, my future goals
as a leader is to strive to become a highly effective leader by learning the
characteristics displayed by the good leaders I follow. The qualities
associated with the effective leaders I follow include their capability of
creating a vision, communicating vision and displaying loyalty and trust

(Dye, 2006, pg. 32). The ineffective leaders I have encountered have
behaviors I personally do not wish to emulate.
Personally in my experiences, leading by example, building good working
relationships, personal accountability and gaining the trust and confidence of
my peers proves to be invaluable. It is very intriguing how the leadership
style one possesses can affect the outcome of a process. I feel with so many
personalities I need to be tolerant, accepting of people and have a positive
regard for myself as well as others. My strengths as a leader are that I listen
to my peers and try to display a positive attitude. I have led by a democratic
style leadership, I feel you have to give empowerment to people and let
them take the ball and run with it (Daft, 2011). Its the few who cant step up
to achieve and have low self-worth which gives me the leadership
opportunity to have a positive influence their development. I find it very
satisfying to lead and have a strong person conviction to help people
succeed, make them feel important and perform to their full potential. One of
my weaknesses is that I let my workers feel comfortable enough to start to
share personal information. They think I can help solve problems at home
and its very hard to cultivate a relationship at work then tear it down by
shutting them off outside of work. I am finding this difficult and have
struggled with uncomfortable situations like that. I am learning to sustain
effective working relationships at work and not displaying such a soft spot for
personal issues without making people feel I dont have a lack of concern or I
am not empathetic to their needs. I do not want to be a leader who is more

concerned with workers liking me. Ethical leaders do the right thing, even
if its inconvenient or unpopular and I need to improve in this arena. I am
ethical but one of my weaknesses is I have a hard time saying no. I am
working on this but it has proven to be difficult.
My Future goals as a leader are to continue to grow professionally and
personally. I would like to be the CNO of my facility in the future. I will
continue to seek out and follow leaders I consider exceptional, who can help
me develop leadership skills that will make me successful. I do think I have
made positive changes in my role as a supervisor and want to continue to
improve as a person, a professional and a leader. I hope to discover a
leadership style that of engages followers to follow our vision and ensure the
success of the organization. I believe how you treat people will determine
your success as a leader. I have heard so many sayings like walk the talk
which is true but I really like a quote from Theodore Roosevelt to sum it up
The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing
how to get along with people.
