Capstone Project: Part I Proposal

EDTC 6332 Practicum in Educational Technology

Gustavo Garza
For the project chosen, I have been given a task by my department chair of creating a
traditional face to face class into an online class. Our college has asked all departments to
increase the amount of online classes offered in the hope of educating people wanting to
complete our degrees but cannot attend a traditional class. The project will not only be
used by me but this course will be given as a shell for all instructors in our department
that would teach this class.
Performance Problem
The degree in computer maintenance at South Texas College (STC) has been traditionally
taught in a traditional class. The traditional class room has been seen as a barrier for
many that would like to take such degree but are not able to make the traditional class
time. Potential students that an online class could assist are people that live afar and
cannot afford to travel to the campus as well as people that work during the day and
cannot attend daytime classes.
Viable Solution
Viable solutions on convert a traditional class onto an online will be challenging but
could be made easy by using a combination of techniques. The solution I propose is
placing online content which would emulate a traditional face-to-face setting. I will use
Blackboard and Moodle as the Learning Management Systems (LMS) as my viable
solutions.
Solution one, I will use blackboard as the carrier for all learning material such as power
points, assignments (discussions, labs and end of chapter questions), assessments
(Quizzes and Test).
Solution two, I will use Moodle as the carrier for all learning material such as power
points, assignments (discussions, labs and end of chapter questions), assessments
(Quizzes and Test).

Description of the solution

Solution 1
I have previously used
blackboard to enhance other
traditional face to face
classes. I feel confident this
LMS will have the
versatility needed to house
all learning material that
will be required for the
online class development.
This online class will
combine both synchronous
and asynchronous
instruction. The intent is to

Solution 2
I will used Moodle to house
all learning material that
will be required for the
online class development.
This online class will be
setup asynchronous for its
instruction. The intent is to
have videos and labs to
guide the student through
the material. The learners
will be assessed with
quizzes and exams. Quizzes

will be given before the
exam in the hopes that the
learner can have feedback
as to their own knowledge
of the subject.
The ability to have worked
with blackboard in my
traditional classes will
allow me to more easily
identify issues and allow me
to anticipate what this
program can and cannot do.
I have a good grasp of this
program and have used it
before to upload material
such as quizzes and labs
onto this platform. The
ability to have the colleges
IT help desk for any
questions have also given
me a safe notion that I will
be able to complete what I
have envisioned.
I feel that due to my
experiences and knowledge
of the subject the ability to
create the online class for
this subject will be
accomplished in the times
of this semester.
I am not shy of talking to a
crowd or asking for help is
another strength that I
believe will help me.
I will take what I have
learned from the online
classes I have taken at

exam in the hopes that the

learner can have feedback
as to their own knowledge
of the subject.

I have used Moodle once

before and have not really
grasped the concept. I have
very little experience with
Moodle. I know there is
some wonderful YouTube
videos online to this LMS. I
feel this LMS will have the
similar functionality that
blackboard offers.
Although I have much
experiences and knowledge
on the subject for this
project the ability to create
the online class with this
LMS will still be
challenging.

UTRGV Brownsville as a
template for my project.
As with many projects, I
feel that I will be requiring
more time to complete
videos, assignments and
have issue with time
constrains to providing
synchronous meetings with
the learners. I feel confident
with blackboard but there
are some uploads that I
have not attempted and
wonder if I will have issue
with them. Items such as the
videos I will compile with
Camtasia, CamStudio, MS
Movie Maker and such.
I consider myself tech
savvy and feel I can solve
issues that are technical in
nature but at the same time I
feel I might not have the
time I need to get that part
of instruction uploaded with
the time constrain of this
class.
The opportunities this
solution will allow for is the
ability to learn a new
method of giving
instruction.
I will use this experience to
enhance the ability to teach
and to teach others in our
college of how they too can
gain knowledge and help
their students online.
This solution will give me
better familiarity to this
program.
This experience will give

For this solution I am again

feeling apprehensive, there
is a slight disadvantage with
this LMS that I feel I might
have with respect to
blackboard. I feel I will not
be able to complete my
project due to time allowed
for this class and some
technical difficulties I might
need to learn and apply to
which might be time
consuming.

The opportunity for this

solution will challenge me
and allow me to get much
more acquainted with
Moodle.
The benefit with learning a
new LMS will allow me to
be more marketable in the
sense that I will have had
one more skills to a resume.

maybe one day be able to
offer all our classes online.

needed to accomplish the

Since I have not worked

though this will be a deal
breaker as to the reason not
to use this solution.

Your chosen solution

Reasons

I will chose to use solution number 1. I will use

Blackboard to create an online class for our department.
The reason I chose to use blackboard as the preferred LMS
is for some obvious reasons to me. I have some exposure
to this program, I have technical support from my college
as appose to Moodle where I feel I would need support
that I would have problem getting. Blackboard is what my
college uses as its LMS, which makes sense I use it. A
Blackboard account is provided to all STC students.

Deliverables
Please describe your deliverables. What does the final project look like? What is the final
project made up of?
The proposed deliverables for the online Microcomputer System Software class
will be to uploaded the different areas that will make up an online class into a blackboard
LMS.
The course will be created to have tabs or links to identify and orient students
through an online course. The tabs or links will navigate through four different subject.
The subjects will concentrate on the software introduction to a computer
All four part of the objectives will be divided into folders with it respective
content such as the modules reading assignments with a summation power point of the
content, the module will have labs where the learner will practice what he or she have
read and learned, and the last part will be to assess the learner for feedback purpose and
to assess the working memory recollection of the learner.
The first module to the class will venture into an introduction to Windows 7
operating systems. As mentioned before all sections will have their independent
subdomain areas.
Module number two will be the Installation of a Windows operating system. Here
also the module will have its subdomains such as reading assignment, power point
summary, labs and assessments.
Module three will have the learner study how to maintain Windows operating
systems. All subdomains will be given.
Module four will cover information on the optimization on Windows.
The online course will be based on a weighted grade system. The final grade
weight for all domain of each module will consist of assignments, labs, quizzes, test and a
comprehensive final exam.

Material requirements:

Students are required to be enrolled at South Texas College majoring in one of our
Computer Degrees. Students will be required to have a Personal Computer (Desktop or
Laptop preferred, no tablets), the PC will need to have at least 60 Gigs of hard drive free
space, must have at least 4 Gigs minimum of RAM, Internet access (broadband access
preferred), the computer will need to have either Internet Explorer or Firefox browser
(latest version) with updated java and adobe plugins, Blackboard account will be
automatically given when enrolled at our college, lockdown browser which can be
downloaded from the online class, students will need to download VMWare Player, a
Windows 7 operating system (URL for downloading of Windows 7 OS free trial will be
given), and VLC media player (for provided video).
Instructional Goal and Objectives
The goal of this project is to give students that need to complete our Computer
Maintenance degrees but cannot attend a traditional face to face classroom a method to
do so by taking an online class. Upon completion of this course the learner will obtain
content on Windows Operating system. The learners completion of the class will aid
them in the area of what is an operating system and get them started on different aspects
of computers. The instruction learners will gather will give them the foundation that will
prepare them for other classes required in this degree.
