EDTC 6332 Educational Technology Practicum

Practicum Project

Project Description
I work for South Texas College (STC), the field I instruct in is Computer and Advance
Technologies. The project I selected for this course was to convert a traditional first
semester class to an online. The class is our CPMT-1404 which is Microcomputer
Systems Software. In this class we cover aspects of a computers Operating System. Our
college uses Blackboard so I used CourseSites/Blackboard for my project.
Standards Met
This project demonstrates proficiencies in the following AECT standards: Standard 1
Content Knowledge, Standard 2 Content Pedagogy, Standard 3 Learning
Environments, Standard 4 Professional Knowledge and Skills, and Standard 5
Research. The chart below illustrates the performances that fulfill the AECT standards.

AECT 2012 Standards

Standard 1 Content Knowledge: Candidates demonstrate the knowledge necessary
to create, use, assess, and manage theoretical and practical applications of educational
technologies and processes.
Performance indicators:


1.1 Creating. Candidates demonstrate the

ability to create instructional materials and
learning environments using a variety of
systems approaches.

1.1 The creation of this course is packaged

in Coursesites. The ability to house all
aspects to each learning modules in one
central LMS has its advantages. I rather
enjoy the ability of having lessons,
assessments, and collaboration in one
central location.

student learning and to enhance their

1.2 The course developed uses techniques

to enhance critical thinking and build a
foundation of cognitive creativity. Power
points are made into interactive learning by
reflecting on learned theories. Discussions
are used to have peer learning and
assessments are used for evaluation and
self reflection.
1.3 Two type of assessments are used in
the course. Quiz questions are divided
between multiple choice, fill-in the blank,
and essay type. The intent is to have the
learner focus on areas and to have them
write answers down. The exams are used

1.4 With the aid of my subject matter
expert (SME) and feedback from faculty
and students I created my course shell for
this online class. I have altered content
and delivery of content which makes
navigating and completing this course
easy and effective. I have created
educational tutorials to help along the way.
1.5 The course developed is a course that
will be hosted online. Due to the nature of
this course students are required to
complete their exercises independently.
Collaboration will be used for discussions
on each module. Students are assessed
after each module for content retention
and evaluation.

Standard 2 Content Pedagogy: Candidates develop as reflective practitioners able to

demonstrate effective implementation of educational technologies and processes based
on contemporary content and pedagogy.

2.5 As indicated, the course was
developed in Coursesites. This allows
a variety of techniques to be used that
is used as a central point to content
and other tools which could be
embedded such as Softchalk,
SpiceNodes and such. Content and
submissions uploaded have techniques
and processes that should be
mastered by technicians that are
completing these type of majors.

Standard 3 Learning Environments: Candidates facilitate learning by creating,

using, evaluating, and managing effective learning environments.

3.1 Coursesites is equivalent to

Blackboard which is used in our
college. The course development and
methods of delivery to this type of
online courses lends themselves to
Coursesites. The accessibility and self
contained database is ideal for an
online student. This LMS lends its self
for the use of common applications
such as Microsoft and Adobe products.
Items such as adobe reader, flash,
word and excel would be common
tools used by most.
3.2 My course was created for the sole
purpose of educating a learner with the
essentials of the objectives. The end
product is to produce a person that will
excel in a technology field. Students
that become productive are those that
have a good understanding of a
subject. The goal of this course is to
give the learner hands-on experience
with real world situations, such as
installing an Operating System.
3.3 The course developed uses
exercises, discussions and exams for
evaluation and assessments. This
course, once transferred to STCs
Blackboard would also have an
evaluation at the end of the semester.
The intent is to use a private evaluation
process for personal feedback from
students towards the course and
instruction. The idea is to use Survey
Monkey or Poll Everywhere as an
online tool for the evaluation of the

matter experts to analyze learners,
develop and design instruction, and
evaluate its impact on learners.
4.2 Leadership. Candidates lead their
peers in designing and implementing
technology-supported learning.
4.3 Reflection on Practice. Candidates
analyze and interpret data and artifacts
and reflect on the effectiveness of the
design, development and implementation
of technology-supported instruction and
learning to enhance their professional

4.1 Although I am the SME on the

content used in my project, I did seek
feedback from my program chair,
faculty member, small group of
students and my peers in this class.
The design came together from
individual experience and the feedback
received from the above groups
4.2 In the collaboration with my peers
each one of us alternated the position
of leaders. I volunteered information
that had been relayed to me in my
research and studies when developing
the project for this course. For
example, In one of my studies, I found
that students did not particularly liked
the Lesson Module useful in
Coursesites, which I then relayed that
information in our collaboration chats.
4.3 This course demonstrated the
importance for reflection. The weekly
outline and milestone table that was
created at the beginning of the
semester gave me a tool to measure
and guide my development while giving
me a plan of action for any issues

along the way.

4.4 The project for this class uses
material that is relevant to the learners
study. The evaluation and training used
for this course allows reflection and
experience of content required in the
technical field. Each module in this
project targets areas that are beneficial
to the development of the learners
critical and cognitive thinking.
4.5 Collaboration and discussions are
used to provide students the means to
communicate and share ideas with
each other. Coursesites allows the
instructor to create content that can be
useful and practical for the wide range
of learning practices. This project was
created to give a student the ability to
stay connected and to create a better
learning experience no matter what
their level of expertise they bring to the

5.3 This course has been developed

with the aid of faculty members and
students. The LMS used allows content
and outlines to be represented in a
clear and precise way. Coursesites
modular style allows for easier
modification of content and the ability
to increase learning strategies as the
instructor might see fit. The layout and
orientation of this project is an
evolution of processes that took place
during the semester. Feedback from
faculty and students have shaped the
course as it is presented today.

5.4 Ethics. Candidates conduct research

and practice using accepted professional
and institutional guidelines and
procedures. Candidates demonstrate
foundational knowledge of the contribution
of research to the past and current theory
of educational communications and

produce a rich and inviting learning
environment for the student.
Modifications Made
My project has been modified several times over. This course was developed
with the formative evaluation received from my program chair, faculty members
and small group of students that aided me. Content such as the introduction
page to the course, the removal of learning module format and the calendar
option for due dates on deadlines. Work format for each modules is standard and
identified in the activity tab. A weekly outline was created from the example used
in class. Activities are placed into folders rather than learning modules from the
request of the students evaluating this course. Videos were added to instruct
students on work needed to be performed. Content was cleaned up after hearing
complaints of the modules being too busy and confusing.
The objective for this course is to modify content and links to keep material up-todate with new technology. I am working with SpicyNodes in develop interactive
presentation, I will upload the link to this course at the start here tab. I have
convinced my program chair to purchase Captivate which I intend to use to
develop better interactive presentations.
