Lesson Title: 3 Days of heart dissections

Prepare By: Lesson by Daniel Bowes, lab by Dan Adrian

Stage 1 Desired Results

Prescribed Learning Outcomes:
Established Goals for the Lesson: Have students be comfortable
with basic terminology used for the circulatory system, as well as
be able to create these connections with a physically heart and
understand where everything fits together.
Connection to / or Activation
of Background Knowledge:

Students have had many

quizzes on the circulatory
system. Accessing this
terminology will be key.
Drawing connections with
working knowledge of objects
to understand the materials
used for the lab.

Students will Walk out With:

Students will know how to use a
scalpel, scales, and alternative methods
of measurement used in non-ELL
science classrooms. They will also know
how to follow lab procedure and lab
rules to prevent injury.
Students will understand that their
actions can have consequences in the
lab. Quick movements and carelessness
can lead to injury.
Students will be able to dissect a
sheep heart!

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Processing / Learning Activities

Designed to Ensure Understanding
and Promote Critical Thinking:
Lab prep worksheets to ensure
understanding of lab materials and
behavior.
Drawing of lab materials to ensure
understanding of what I am talking
about.
Scales worksheet to ensure they can
use scales properly.
Step by Step Through the Lesson:
Teacher

20 minutes spent doing prep for lab.

Possible Ways to
Differentiate
Be sure to pronunciate

Make sure there are no
religious oppositions to

cut the ear of the right atria with
the scissors, then straight down the
left side of the heart through the right
ventricle, exposing it.

Same cut on the left atria , then down
to the left ventricle, paying attention
to the difference in thickness of the
muscle on this side of the heart.

Final cut, divide the septum in two
from the tip of the apex through to
the aorta, splitting the heart into two
cross sections.
Cleanup 10 minutes minimum from
everybody.
Day 3 Data Gathering of inside of the
heart.
