6th Grade Honors Math

Syllabus
Welcome! I am so glad you are in my class this year. I expect you to have a very
productive and positive school experience. To start the year off right, I am sending home this
syllabus to give you and your parents an overview of what to expect in math.
Course Description: Students will complete advanced work in mathematical computation,
problem-solving skills, and other mathematical concepts. Students will understand ratio concepts
and use ratio reasoning to solve problems; apply and extend previous understanding of
multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions; compute fluently with multi-digit
numbers and find common factors and multiples; apply and extend previous understanding of
numbers to the system of rational numbers; apply and extend previous understanding of
arithmetic to algebraic expressions; reason about and solve one-variable equations and
inequalities; represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent
variables; solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume;
develop understanding of statistical variability; and summarize and describe distribution. (6th
Grade Curriculum)
Students will also analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and
mathematical problems; apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions
to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers; use properties of operations to generate
equivalent expressions; solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic
expressions and equations; draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the
relationship between them; solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure,
area, surface area, and volume; use random sampling to draw inferences about a population;
draw informal comparative inferences about two populations; and investigate chance processes
and develop, use, and evaluate probability models. (7th Grade Curriculum)
Additionally, students will become proficient in the use of the standards for mathematical
practice.
Standards for Mathematical Practice:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Attend to precision.
Look for and make use of structure.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

All of the math lessons are located on the Pearson Realize Platform. In addition to the Pearson
lessons, a combination of games, real life experimentation, multisensory instruction, skill and

drill practice (IXL), small group instruction, cooperative group learning, and one-to-one
instruction will be used.
Course Objectives: Students will demonstrate mastery of all 6th grade and most 7th grade math
skills as listed on the Alabama Course of Study. A link to this information may be found on the
Huntsville City Schools teacher links page using the Alex icon, or you may use the following
web address: http://alex.state.al.us/standardAll.php?grade=6&subject=MA2013&summary=2&pf=1
Course Expectations: Students are expected to participate in class, follow all classroom rules
and procedures, work cooperatively with peers, ask questions when something is not understood,
and complete their homework.
Homework: Students will have homework every night. Homework will be listed on
totora.weebly.com as well as on Edmodo. When IXL homework is given, students should
practice the skill for 30 minutes or until mastery, whichever comes first. Students who do
not complete their homework will have the opportunity to make it up during lunch for 1/2
credit. This is called working lunch. Students who do not complete homework due to
absences or technical issues will be given an extra day to complete it, provided that a note is
sent by a parent or guardian. If a student is absent for more than one day, the number of days
absent will be the number of additional days given to make-up missed work. Due to the
difficulty level of some questions on Pearson, students will be given full credit for a score of
85% or higher on homework as long as all of the problems have been attempted.
Behavior: I firmly believe that your child has a right to learn and I have a right to teach.
Therefore, the following discipline plan will be in effect at all times.
Rules:
1.)
2.)
3.)
4.)
5.)

Respect yourself and others.

Be prepared and on time.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
No food, drinks, or gum allowed.
Adhere to all HCS technology guidelines.

Rewards: To encourage students to follow the classroom rules, I will reinforce

appropriate behavior with verbal praise, small prizes, tickets, and good notes home. A
ticket will be drawn periodically and the winner will receive a prize from the prize box.
Consequences: If a student chooses to break a rule:
1st Time:
2nd Time:
3rd Time:
4th Time:
5th Time:

Verbal Warning
Behavior Plan & Isolated Lunch
Behavior Report & Parent Contact
Morning or Afternoon Detention & Parent Conference
Referral to Administration

Classroom Supplies Needed:

Sharpened Pencils
3 Subject Notebook (Red)
2 packs of skinny dry erase markers (low odor, black, fine tip)
Red inch binder with loose leaf paper and graph paper
Basic calculator

Contact Information: Please do not hesitate to contact me whenever you have a concern. The
best way to reach me is through e-mail (tina.totora@hsv-k12.org). I check my e-mail daily and
usually respond within 24 hours. If you are unable to e-mail me, please call the school and leave
a message or send a note with your child.
Support Systems for Students: Students may come to me for additional support during
enrichment, before school, or after school. While students will be issued workbooks, textbooks
are not available. However, there is an abundant amount of practice for skills covered on IXL.
Additionally, all of the lessons I teach are available on Pearson.

I have read and I understand Mrs. Totoras syllabus. I have also visited
totora.weebly.com. I understand that this site should be visited regularly for
important math information.
