02E Jesus Has No Equality With God

Last updated 08/02/15 this article is eighteen pages long

Introduction
Some say that Jesus the Son is equal, or co-equal, with God the Father. This in depth study will show that quite the
opposite is true and that there is clear hierarchy with God the Father the supreme being, and Jesus Christ the Son. Jesus,
although having extremely powerful authority, is not equal with God the Father at any point in time or before time.
The thought that Jesus is equal with God the Father is partially based on the Trinitarian philosophy and the
misunderstanding of John 5:18 along with Philippians 2:5-7 both of which are analyzed.
Once we have looked at the following sections regarding the position Jesus has with God his Father it should become
clear that the possibility of Jesus equality with God does not exist. Jesus is in full submission to the Father which is in
direct opposition to the thought of equality. It would be a dishonor both to God and to Christ, who in everything he did
elevated God, if Christ were to be elevated in such a way that God was set to the side of him.
Whether you agree or disagree, in part or in whole, big or small, please email me any feedback to help improve this
study. I would also appreciate any help with its logic, grammar, typos, editing etc.

Part 0A Barton Stone

Here is a sample of the viewpoint of Barton Stone the founder of the Churches of Christ in the early 1800s whose
viewpoints are based on the older translations such as KJV etc.
Some are offended with us, inferring from these remarks, that we deny the equality of the Son with the Father. I have
always thought this doctrine very obscure; as equality implies plurality; and one is not equal to itself. If God be one infinite
spirit without parts, and if there be but one infinite and true God, then there cannot be another equal to him. This is the
language of consistent reason; but if revelation speaks differently, reason must humbly submit. There are but two texts of
Scripture that I recollect, which directly speak of the equality of the Son with the Father. These I will notice.
John 5: 18, "Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he had not only broken the Sabbath, but said also
that God was his Father, making himself equal with God." The Jews concluded, because Jesus said that God was his
Father, that he was making himself equal with God. So they at another time concluded, that he had a devil and was mad.
Their conclusions respecting him are not to be received as true, because they were blind and knew him not. This of his
making himself equal with God was undoubtedly wrong; for Jesus labors in the following verses to convince them of it--19,
"Then answered Jesus and said, verily, verily, I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself but what he seeth the
Father do," etc. Surely if Jesus had been equal to the Father, he would not have used such language as this, directly
calculated to mislead the people. In 20 v. Jesus speaks of the Father, showing him all things that himself doeth--26 v. As
the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself--v. 27. And hath given him authority to
execute judgment--30. v., "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just: because I seek
not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." These things surely do not look like equality.
The other text is Phil 2: 6-7, "Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself
of no reputation (emptied himself, Gr.), and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of man.
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death--even the death of the cross.
Wherefore God hath highly exalted him," etc. To me it is evident, that the person spoken of in the text cannot be the one
only living and true God; for God cannot be emptied, humbled and exalted without a change. They who are acquainted
with the Greek, are well assured that our translation of this text is not the best. Dr. Doddridge is much better, and certainly
the most literal. "Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be as God." Dr. Whitby confirms this reading by
abundant quotations from the Septuagint, where the same Greek word isa is translated as instead of equal. See Whitby in
loco. That form of God, which he had, was the glory he had with the Father before the world was. In this glory he thought it
not robbery to be as God. Yet so great was his love to sinners that be emptied himself of this glory, put off the form of God,
and took on him the form of a servant, and died for our redemption. But God hath highly exalted him to that same glory, for
which to be restored Jesus prayed--John xvii: 5.
There is a sense in which Jesus may be said to be equal with God, as in I. Cor. xv: 24, 28, "Then cometh the end, when
be shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father, when he shall have put down all rule, authority and
power. And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him, that put all
things (God excepted, v. 7) under him, that God may be all in all." If in the end, the Son is to be subject to God, it implies
that now, or till the end come, he is not subject; but he is not superior, for God himself is not put under him: therefore he
must be equal. He is not equal in essence, being or eternity; else he could never be subject to the Father--and such an
equality would destroy the unity of God. But he is equal in the great work of redemption; all power in heaven and earth
being delivered to him, and all things in heaven, as principalities, powers, etc., being put under him, to accomplish the
work, for which he was sent

Summary:
Equality implies plurality; and one is not equal to itself. If God be one infinite spirit without parts, and if there be but
one infinite and true God, then there cannot be another equal to him. This is the language of consistent reason; but if
revelation speaks differently, reason must humbly submit.

Part 1A People were a Son of God

The first parts 1A-2C are of information regarding peoples position as Sons of God, and God as their Father.
It is important to see the biblical comparrison between how people are viewed and how Jesus is viewed.
Deuteronomy 14:1-2 You are the sons of the LORD your God. You shall not cut yourselves or make any
baldness on your foreheads for the dead.
2 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for his treasured
possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
Moses is talking to the Israelites, they were Sons of the LORD God and were holy and chosen. Specifically different to
all other people of the earth.
Deuteronomy 32:8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind,
he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the Sons of God.
9
But the LORDs portion is his people,
Moses again talking to the people who had been separated "according to the number of the Sons of God."
Hosea 1:9-10 And the LORD said, Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your
God.
Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered.
And in the place where it was said to them, You are not my people, it shall be said to them, Children of the
living God.
Vs9 The people stop being Gods people, they stop being Sons of God
Vs10 God forgives the people and they are restored back to Children of Sons of God
Children is from the Hebrew word Bene/H1121 which means son or grandson
This could say Sons of the living God. Children is perhaps a better translation as it incorporates women.
Luke 3:37-38 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of
Cainan, 38 the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God
A list of sons and their fathers through approximately fifty generations all the way to Adam as the Son of God.
Summary:
Deuteronomy 14:1-2
Deuteronomy 32:8
Hosea 1:9-10
Luke 3:38

Moses tells the people they are Sons of God

According to the Sons of God
Children of the living God
Seth the son of Adam, the son of God

There are several other passages that show certain groups of people as being sons of God including Adam.

Part 1B God is the Father of All People:

All the people of the earth have the LORD God as their father in both the OT and the NT.
Deuteronomy 32:1 Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.
6 Is this the way you repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people?
Is he not your Father (H1 Ab), your Creator, who made you and formed you?
Vs6 Jehovah God reminds the people that he is their Father, who created them, made them, formed them.
We are created by our Father who is Jehovah God
A son is created by his father, here God uses both descriptions to identify the creation and the birth.

Isaiah 64:8 Yet, O LORD, you are our Father (H1 Ab). We are the clay, you are the potter (H3335 Yatsar: To
form, fashion, frame); we are all the work of your hand
Hebrew: Jehovah ab chomer yatsar maaseh yad
English: LORD father clay fashion work hand
Jehovah God is the father of these people
The father used the clay (the dust of the ground) to form people
Father is again written in conjunction with creating people
Malachi 2:8 you have violated the covenant with Levi," says the LORD Almighty.
10 Have we not all one Father (H1 Ab)? Did not one God create (H1254 Bara: To create shape or form) us?
Why do we profane the covenant of our fathers (H1 Ab) by breaking faith with one another?
Vs8 Jehovah God admonishes the priests
Vs10 Jehovah God says that they all have one Father
Vs10 Jehovah God says that one God created them, Jehovah God
Two statements paralleling God the father with a God who is their creator
We have one heavenly father and creator.
Hebrew: echad ab echad el bara
English: one father one god created - meaning we are created by our father (God) according to the other scriptures in
P4, P5, P6.
1 Chronicles 29:10 So David blessed the LORD in the sight of all the assembly; and David said, "Blessed are
You, O LORD God of Israel our father (H1 Ab), forever and ever.
David blesses Jehovah God of Israel his father forever.
Jehovah God is Davids father, just as his ancestors are and Jesse is in Ruth 4:17.
Heb: barak Jehovah elohiym yisrael ab
ad owlam owlam
Eng: bless LORD God
Israel father for ever ever
God is the father of Israel just as Mizraim is the father of the Ludites, Genesis 10:13 (see also P3)
Summary:
Deuteronomy 32:1
Isaiah 64:8
Malachi 2:8
1 Chronicles 29:10

Is this the way you treat the LORD, is he not your Father and creator?
Yet you O LORD, you are our Father
Have we not all one Father
David said "O LORD God of Israel our Father"

The OT people of God said several times that the LORD God is their Father and creator.

Part 1C Jesus told the people that God was Their Father
Jesus told the people on numerous occasions that God was also their father. Mathew 5:16, 5:45, 5:48, 6:1, 6:4, 6:6, 6:8,
6:9, 6:14, 6:18, 6:26, 6:32, 7:11, 11:25, 11:26, Luke 6:36 and many more. Throughout these passages Jesus alternates
between "your Father," "our Father," and "my Father." The definition of "Father" is stays the same throughout the
contexts.
Mathew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and
give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
The Sermon on the Mount where Jesus was preaching to large amounts of people, not just disciples, who were "from
Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan." He repeated the same
statement several times in one sermon that God is the Father of these people.

Mathew 6:1 Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for
then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
4 And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Continuing the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus again repeating that God is the Father of all these people
Luke 6:36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
More from the Sermon on the Mount.
Summary:
Mathew 5:16 + 48
Mathew 6:1
Luke 6:36

Jesus tells the people that God is his and their Father
Jesus continues repeating that God is their Father
Again, Jesus tells the people that God is their Father.

There are many passages in the NT where Jesus tells the people that God is their Father, his Father, and ties them
together with himself by saying "our Father" in Mathew 6:9 and "we worship" in John 4:22.
Because Jesus had told the people, including the Jews, that God was their Father they could also call God "my own
father" as Jesus did. They would then be accused of blasphemy by a certain group of mistaken, misinformed Jews who
through their lack of understanding would then want to put them to death also.
Clearly none of the thousands of people hearing this would be equal with God because God was their Father.
There is a long in depth study at O1D The NT Father linked here that shows among other things that God is the Father
and creator of all human beings, however we are all separated through our sins and then some are adopted back through
Christ.

Part 2A Jesus was the Son of God

Both God and Jesus along with some people said Jesus was the Son of God.
Mathew 3:17 And a voice from heaven said This is my son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased.
God said Jesus is his son, not this is God. Was God right or wrong when he said this? Was God holding back some
information as to the identity of his Son Jesus?
If Jesus is God, you would think God would have said this is me in the flesh, I am pleased with myself.
A Son of God is distinct from God, the word Son suggests later origin and lesser dignity. A son submits to his father.
Mathew 17:5 A voice from a cloud said This is my son whom I love, with him I am well pleased. Listen to
him.
God said this is my son. A son is different from the father. God did not say, this is me in a human body He did not say
this is my brother or my father. Why?
When Jesus refers to his Father he calls him God. Why, if Jesus is God, does God never call Jesus God? Was God the
Father trying to hide it from us? Was it meant to be a secret?
Mark 14:61-62 Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
62
"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming
on the clouds of heaven."
Firstly Jesus says "I am the Son of God" and secondly "I am coming with God". They will come together
Jesus always claimed to be the son, never God
If Jesus is God, did he lie every time he said he was the Son of God Was he being deceitful?

Do some really believe God is coming with God at the end of times? So two Gods?
Mathew 27:43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'
If anyone had heard or thought that Jesus was God, surely when they were at the cross ridiculing him instead of quoting
Jesus as saying I am the Son of God they would have said something like "he thinks he is God" etc. Could it be true
that Jesus is God and yet at the time not one person knew it? If there was one person who had the remotest notion that
Jesus was God they would have said it right here. They didnt say more because Jesus had plainly told them who he
was, and he said I am the Son of God.
Summary:
Mathew 3:17 God said "this is my son."
Mathew 17:5 God said "this is my son."
Mark 14:61-62 Are you the son of the Blessed one? " I am," said Jesus
Mathew 27:43 the people quoted Jesus as saying "I am the son of God."
God said Jesus was His son, Jesus said he was God's son, and the people said Jesus was God's Son.

Part 2B God Is the Father of Jesus

Hebrews 5:5 So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him,
"You are my Son; today I have become your Father.
ESV says I have begotten you.
Christ did not decide, God did.
God said to Jesus. They spoke to each other. This is because they are two separate beings.
If Jesus were God, this would not make sense. You are my son, I am your Father.
God said "I have become your Father." This signifies a point before it happened when God was not his Father.
John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Jesus confirms that he was with God The Father before the world began.
Jesus had glory with his Father before creation.
Romans 15:6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God and Father of Jesus Christ
The Father gave Jesus life
God holds the highest position possible known to all creation, therefore when the word father is also applied to God the
only additional implication is that God is now also a male ancestor which up until that point he was not. All the other
positions of title or honor that come with the name father would have already applied to God from anything that was
created not fathered.
Summary:
Hebrews 5:5 Today I have become your father
John 17:5
Father glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world began
Romans 15:6 Glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God, Jesus and Paul all say that God is the Father of Jesus. There was a day when Jesus was not the Son of God.

Part 2C: Simlarities and differences between Men and Jesus as a Son of God
Jesus is a Son of God and we are Sons of God. What is the difference? What are the similarities?

1/ Jesus was born and created a Son of God before

creation as a spirit, God became Jesuss father during
that period.

1/ God is the father of all people and is directly

involved in the individual birth and creation of every
person that ever lived. Each person is born a Son of
God

2/ Jesus again had God as his father who prior to

Bethlehem impregnated Mary. Jesus continued to be a
Son of God.

2/ Each human being that ever lived has an immediate

biological human father who impregnated their
mother. (Except Adam and Eve)

2A/ Jesus was not created or born of an earthly Father.

3/ On earth Jesus was not separated from God because
of his own sins. He remained a Son of God

3/ On earth all people are separated from God by their

own sins. They are fallen Sons of God

3A/ At his death, Jesus was separated from God

because he took on the sins of the world, was a
sacrifice, a ransom and a curse.
4/ Jesus experienced the pain of being separated from
God for between six hours and three days.

4/ Due to Jesus actions, people are able to achieve

forgiveness from God through Jesus Christ and again
be worthy to be called Sons of God while on earth

5/ Jesus was raised to heaven and is now a Son of God

without end

5/ Christians will go through a process on the Day of

Judgment to complete becoming eternal Sons of God

Based on this assessment the following relevant similarities are true.

1/ Both Jesus and all Sons of God have a beginning of life and are therefore not the eternal God.
2/ Both Jesus and all Sons of God are given life by God and are therefore not God
3/ Both Jesus and all Sons of God have been separated from God and therefore are not God.
4/ Both Jesus and all Sons of God could remain separated from God and are therefore not God
5/ Both Jesus and all Sons of God have to rely on God to be raised to heaven and therefore are not God
6/ Both Jesus and all Sons of God have to rely on God to be granted eternal life and therefore are not God
The following relevant differences are true.
1/ Jesus was a Son before creation, human Sons are not
2/ Jesus was a Gk Prototokos Firstborn Son of God, no other Son is.
3/ Jesus is a Gk Monogenes one and only Son of God, no other Son is.
4/ Jesus remained sinless and resisted all temptation, no othe Son did this
5/ Jesus is the first Son to receive eternal salvation
Summary:
The six similarities and five differences referred to here each individually signify that Jesus is not God. Together the
evidence is overwhelming.
The support for the details stated in Part 2C can be found in and in depth analysis 02C Jesus the Son of God linked here

Part 3A God's View of Equality with Him

God challenges the people to try to compare him to someone else

Isaiah 40:24-26 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows on them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble.
25 To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling
them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.
Vs24 The lives of people are shown to be short and over quickly
Vs25 God asks "who could be compared to Him?"
Vs26 God created all those who think they could be compared to Him.
Isaiah 46:3-6 Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne
by me from before your birth, carried from the womb;
4 even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry
and will save.
5 To whom will you liken me and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be alike?
6 Those who lavish gold from the purse, and weigh out silver in the scales, hire a goldsmith, and he makes
it into a god; then they fall down and worship!
Vs3 All the remnant of the house of Israel have been borne by God
Vs4 God made them and God can save them
Vs5 God asks a rhetorical question knowing that there is none equal to Him
Vs6
Summary:
Isaiah 40:25
Isaiah 46:5

God asks "who could be compared to Him?"

God asks a rhetorical question knowing that there is none equal to Him

If God insinuates that none are equal to Him, then that includes Jesus.
If Jesus is God then he is not equal to himself because he is himself!

Part 3B Jesus' View of Equality with God

What did Jesus say about the subject of equality with God?
John 10:29 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My
Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all.
If Jesus says the Father is greater than all in John 10, then he is greater than Jesus which confirms there is no equality.
Unless of course there is some type of an exception to this statment.
John 14:28 You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be
glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
If there is any doubt in John 10:29 , Jesus clearly now says he himself is less than the Father, Jesus states a hierarchy. If
Jesus were God he would not say this. How can Jesus be God and yet be less than God? It is not biblically or logically
possible.
How can the so called second person of the Trinity be less than another person of the Trinity?
No scripture says Jesus was equal and became less equal after coming to the earth!
For Jesus to be equal with God he would have said the Father is NOT greater than I.
To say Jesus is equal with God is to directly disagree with what Jesus said regarding any equality.
1 Corinthians 11:3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman
is man, and the head of Christ is God.

This passage was written after Christ had returned to heaven. Christ is now in heaven and has a head over him who is
God. Some argue that although Jesus was less than the Father while he was on the earth, Jesus was fully God before
coming to earth and again after he returned to heaven, this scripture opposes that idea.
Everything stops at God as he is the head over everything, Christ included. The Church is not Christ, woman is not
man, and Christ is not God.
God was before Christ, God is the head of Christ, God is different from Christ
Christ was before man, Christ is the head of man, Christ is different from man
Man was before woman, man is the head of woman, man is different from woman
How can Christ have a head over him if he is God? He cannot, and is not.
Paul is precisely clear that God is over and above Christ, therefore Christ is not God.
Summary:
John 10:29
John 14:28
1 Cor 11:3

The Father is greater than all which confirms no equality

Jesus says he is less than the Father which confirms no equality
After Christ has returned to heaven, the head of Christ is God which confirms no equality

God the Father is greater than Christ the Son both during Jesus' life on earth and now that he is back in heaven, which
confirms no equality

Part 3C Are Sons Ever Equal with their Fathers?

It seems extremely strange to me that John 5:18 and Philippians 2:5-7 are the only bible passages that talks about a
father being equal with his son. Why if it is such an important topic is there nothing more in the scriptures?
John didn't write it to say that he agreed with the statement, he wrote it because it was the Jews mistaken viewpoint.
Philippians is assessed elsewhere.
There is a quotation and analysis from www.FirstAdvent.org, the Catholic website, which identifies
the OT Firstborn Son background linked here and the rights that go with that title including "everywhere the first place
after his father." After his father as opposed to equaly with his father.
Summary:
Where are the bible passages that say a son is equal with his father?

Part 3D The Jew's Laws Against Being a Son of God

The Jews had a law against claiming to be a "Son of God."
John 19:7 Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the
Son of God."
Summary:
If the Jews had a law in place for such a statement then obviously there must have been many others that had claimed
to be a Son of God. Was this law in place because these previous claimants had thought that they were the creator of
the universe? Surely not! It was in place because the claimants were claiming some sort of high authority which the
early Jews had outlawed to such an extent that the penalty was death. It is preposterous to imagine that any of the
previous claimants, or any of the previous Jews, had actually considered the claimants to be YHWH God. If the Jews
had believed any of the claimants to actually be God, then they must also have believed they had previously killed the
eternal God on numerous occasions which again is unthinkable. No, the previous Jews had wrongly killed people that
they had considered liars, their viewpoint was wrong before and it was wrong now.

Part 4A: Jesus is under the authority of God:

Romans 13:1 For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
All authority comes from God
Mathew 28:18 Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Jesus had been given all authority at a certain point, therefore there was a point before he was given it. If there was a
point before he was given it then he cannot be God who has always had authority.
Additionally, who gave Jesus all authority? God. Jesus did not have authority until God gave it to him.
If he needed to be given authority he cannot be God who doesn't need to be given anything because he owns
everything.
Summary:
Romans 13:1 All authority comes from God
Mathew 28:18 Jesus was given authority by God
Because there was a point before he had all authority he cannot be God who always had authority.
Because Jesus was given all authority by God, he cannot be God who doesn't need to be given anything.
Jesus is not equal or co-equal with God for these reasons.
This are two scriptures fron an in depth analysis of how Jesus is under the authority of God, see Section 15 linked here

Part 4B: Jesus does what he is commanded by God

John 15:10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's
commands and remain in his love.
Disciples have a choice to obey Jesus and remain in his love.
He says If this, which means if not something else.
So if we dont obey Jesus commands we might not remain in Jesus love.
Jesus had a choice to obey Gods commands and remain in his love. If obeying the commands kept Jesus in Gods love,
then Jesus actions were relevant to Gods actions.
God had a choice and Jesus had a choice of what would happen to Jesus, if Jesus didnt obey Gods commands. Would
Jesus have remained in Gods love? From this passage it would seem not!
The first part of the passage is directly compared to the second part of the passage. Ther first part shows that we won't
remain in Christ's love compared with the fact that Christ won't remain in Gods love.
God could not, would not stop loving himself.
Jesus had to obey Gods commands in order to remain in Gods love he did so and submitted to God.
If God could choose not to have Jesus remain in Gods love then Jesus cannot be God!
Summary:
There cannont be equality between Jesus and God if Jesus submits to Gods commands
Jesus cannot be God if he might not remain in Gods love through not obeying commands

Part 4C: Jesus has a different will but submits to Gods will
Luke 22:42 Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."
43
An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
Vs42 Gods will and Jesus will were different, God does not have two wills.

Jesus submitted to Gods will, God does not submit to anyone

How can the Father and Jesus have different wills and Jesus be God? He cannot
Why does Jesus submit to the Fathers will if Jesus is God? Why not the other way around?
If Jesus were God, would he have to ask himself for anything?
Jesus asked God for a way out of doing what God wanted. God is not double minded
Vs43 Would God need angels to strengthen himself if he is God
Summary:
There is not equality between Jesus and God if Jesus has to submit to Gods will.
Jesus has a different will but submits to Gods will, God cannot have two different wills
This is one scripture from an in depth analysis of what it means that Jesus has a different will from God, see Section 17

Part 4D: Jesus is the servant of God

Mathew 12:18 Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, the one I love in whom I delight. I will put my spirit in
him and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
God says, here is a man, a servant, going from not having the Spirit of God to having the Spirit of God.
Why would God say here is my servant if God is the servant? God is not his own servant
If Jesus were God why did he not already have the Spirit of God? God always has His own spirit
Summary:
There is not equality between Jesus and God if Jesus is a servant and God his master
Jesus is a servant of God, God is not a servant of himself
This is one scripture from an in depth study on Jesus as the servant of God see Section 17B xxxx coming 2016.

Part 5A: God puts all things in position for Jesus

Ephesians 1:22-23 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for
the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
God put all things under Christ.
All things were already under God, if Jesus were God he would not need to put everything under himself
God appointed Jesus as the head of the Church. God did not appoint God.
Jesus was appointed by another, God did not need appointing.
Jesus was not the head before this time. Jesus went from not being the head, to being the head?
Summary:
God puts all things in position for Jesus, Jesus cannot be God if he needs this doing for him
This is one scripture from an in depth analysis on God putting things in position for Jesus see Section 22 xxxx coming

Part 6: When God and Jesus return in the future

Jesus returns the kingom to God, this passage was written several years after Jesus was back with God in heaven.

1 Cor 15:24-28 Then the end will come, when he Jesus hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has
destroyed all dominion, authority and power.
25 For he Jesus must reign until he God has put all his Jesus enemies under his feet.
26
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
27 For he God "has put everything under his Jesus feet." Now when it says everything has been put under him
Jesus, it is clear this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.
28When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so
that God may be all in all.
Vs24-28 Paul says that at the ends of time, Jesus will do certain things then God will do certain things.
Vs24 Jesus, who several years after his death and till the end of times, is still in authority over all things. He then hands
the kingdom back to God, whose it was originally.
Vs25 Paul explains how Jesus is given responsibilities to reign by God.
Vs25 God puts all Jesus' enemies under his feet.
Vs 27 is quoting Psalm 8:6
Vs27 Everything is under Christ except God, because God put it there. God is over Christ.
Vs28 God is in authority over Jesus the son, not the other way around. At the finish Jesus will still be under God, Gods
subject.
God is above Jesus now, always has been and always will be, therefore Jesus is not God.
Summary:
1 Cor 15:24
Vs25
Vs25
Vs27

If Jesus is God he would not give the kingdom back to God at the end of times.
God is not given the responsibilities to reign
If Jesus is God he doesnt need God to put all his enemies under his feet
God put all things, except Himself, under Jesus. This is while they are both in heaven, their
positions could not be switched. God is in does the placement of all things, Non God recieves.
Vs28
Here we have all powerful God and Jesus who is not all powerful but is in subjection to God. After
Judgment Day, Jesus will be made subject to God. "Made" and "subject" are not words that could
be directed at an all powerful God.
This passage was written several years after Jesus had died and returned to heaven, and is referring to the position and
hierarchy of Christ and God at the end of times. God is in authority over Jesus the son, not the other way around, and
no equality. At the End of Times Jesus will still be under God, Gods subject. God is above Jesus now, always has been
and always will be.
This is one scripture from an in depth analysis of when God and Jesus return in the future, Section 38 coming 2015

Part 7 Psalm 8:3-6

This is the connection between Psalm 8 and Hebrews 2, where vs4-6 are quoted in Hebrews 2:6-8. The breakdown
listed below shows that most of the passages are about men or humanity and the parts that are in reference to Jesus
show that equality with God is in opposition to the meanings exposed here.
Psalm 8:1-9 O LORD (YHWH), our Lord (adonay), how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have
set your glory above the heavens.
2
From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and
the avenger.
3
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4
what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?
5
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings (H430 Elohiym) and crowned him with glory and honor.
6
You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
7
all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
8
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
9
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Written by King David who is marvelling at all that is in creation, and considering man's position as God's
representative on earth as ruler over everything.
Vs1 David addresses God as YHWH which is His personal name, he then says God is our "adonay" which means
master. The name that is majestic is YHWH, not adonay. The LORD/YHWH/ Jehovah has set His glory above the
heavens.
Vs3 David is considering the heavenly expanse in contrast to vs4
Vs4 We as men are seemingly insignificant and so small in the scale of things, compared with the heavens, and yet God
cares for us. Son of man is in the OT 100 times inc 93 times in Ezekiel and in the NT 83 times. In the seventeen
times it is in the OT, outside of Ezekiel, it is usually refering to men in a general way.
Vs5 There is considerable difference here based on the translation.
"lower than the angels" : AV, Darby, DR, KJV, NCV, NKJV,
"lower than God": ASV, GW, HCSB, NASB, NLT, NRSV, RSV,
"lower than heavenly beings": ESV, LEB, NET, NIRV, NIV, TNIV,
The translators are divided as to whether YHWH made man lower than angels, God, or heavenly beings. The problem
word is H430/elohiym which in virtually all other OT contexts is translated "God."
The best way to understand which is correct is to look at Hebrews 2:7 which is a direct quotation and that uses the
Greek word G32/angelos, it translates to "angels" in 19 or the 20 translations quoted. Additionally G32/angelos appears
in the NT 176 times and is translated "angels" 169 times and messengers 6 times (angels are considered as messengers.)
Based on the NT, H430/elohiym in Psalm 8:5 should be translated angels.
Vs5 Referencing Psalm 21:5 He has great glory because you gave him victories; you gave him honor and praise
Vs6-8 This is in reference to
Genesis 1:26 And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over
the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
Psalm 8:6-8 is in direct reference to the power God gave to mankind as ruler over every living thing on the earth.
Vs9 A repetition of vs1 reminding us that the name YHWH (often Jehovah) is majestic.
Hebrews 2:1-9
1
We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
2
For if the message spoken by angels (G32/Angelos) was binding, and every violation and disobedience
received its just punishment,
3
how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord
(G2962 Kurios) (Jesus), was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
4
God (G2316 Theos) also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit
distributed according to his (God's) will.
5
It is not to angels (G32/Angelos) that he (God) has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
6
But there is a place where someone has testified: "What is man (all people) that you are mindful of him, the son
of man (men) that you care for him?
7
You made him (men) a little lower than the angels; (G32/Angelos) you crowned him with glory and honor
8
and put everything under his feet." In putting everything under him, God (should be He) left nothing that is
not subject to him (men). Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him (men).
9
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels (G32/Angelos), now crowned with glory and
honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God (G2316 Theos: God) he might taste death for
everyone (all people).
Hebrews 2 is a follow on from chapter 1 where Jesus is announced
Vs2 Referencing to Galatians 3:19 the law was put in place through angels (paraphrased)
Vs3 This is in reference to the Lord (Jesus') claims to be the savior of mankind throughout the gospels.
Vs4 God supported Jesus' claims by signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Vs5 As quoted in Genesis 1:26 the world is subject to mankind, not angels.
Vs6 As shown in the analysis of Psalm 8, Hebrews 2:6-8 is in reference to mankind being given dominion of
everything God created on the earth.
Vs7 God made mankind "a little lower than the angels," and yet elsewhere it says angels are ministering spirits sent to
serve mankind. There must be some ways we are lower than angels, and other ways we are not!

Vs8 As per Psalm 8 and Genesis 1:26 God put everything under the feet of mankind.
Vs8 The last sentence of tells us there is a problem that everything is not yet subject to mankind. This is in reference to
death which we do not have any power over.
Vs9 Jesus is reintroduced to to resolve the problems stated in the last sentence of vs8.
Jesus was made like us, lower than the angels ( in whatever way that implies.)
But because Jesus has overcome death he is crowned with glory and honor from God.
Jesus dominance over death is for the rest of mankind.
Hebrews 2:10-18 For it was fitting that he (God), for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many
sons to glory, should make the founder (Jesus) of their salvation perfect through suffering.
11 For he who sanctifies (Jesus) and those who are sanctified (people) all have one source (God). That is why
he (Jesus) is not ashamed to call them (disciples) brothers,
12 saying, I (Jesus) will tell of your (God's) name to my brothers (disciples); in the midst of the congregation
I will sing your (God's) praise.
13 And again,I (Jesus) will put my trust in him (God). And again, Behold, I and the children God has given
me.
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he (Jesus) himself likewise partook of the same
things, that through death he (Jesus) might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
16 For surely it is not angels that he (Jesus) helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
17 Therefore he (Jesus) had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful
and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
18 For because he (Jesus) himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Vs10 Reference 1 Cor 8:6 there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist
Vs11 Reference Hebrews 13:12 Jesus suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his blood
Vs11 We are brothers with Jesus, we are sons of God. If Jesus is God then nonsensically we should be sons and
brothers with God at the same time!
Vs12 Jesus preached to the people regarding God's name and sang His praise. Jesus has a God.
Vs13 Jesus trusts in God, like people do.
Vs14-15 Jesus, from his previous heavenly position, became human being. He did this to show humanity that after he
died, resurection and after-life existed along with salvation with God.
Vs16 Jesus came to help all mankind
Vs17 Jesus the High priest in service to God, God is/was not a High priest in service to Himself.
Vs18 Jesus was tempted, God cannot be tempted.
Summary:
This interpretation of Psalm 8:1-9 and Hebrews 2:1-18 shows that equality with God is in direct opposition to their real
meaning. If you have an opposing view, please let me know as I am unable to find anything substantial in my research.
However we interpret the relationship between Psalm 8 and Hebrews 2 it seems that God makes Jesus who Jesus is.
They make specific and clear differences between God and Jesus, Jesus is certainly not God and is definitely not his
equal

Part 8 John 5:18

Some say if Jesus is equal with God then he must be God
John 5:18
For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even
calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
From the Jews point of view being a son was claiming to be equal, even the Jews realized he wasnt claiming to be
God.

There is an in depth analysis of John 5:18 linked here

Part 9 Philippians 2:5-7

There are some that say Philippians 2:5-7 shows that Jesus is equal with God.
There is an in depth study of Philippians 2:5-7, linked here, that will show that interpretation to be incorrect and
nothing in that passage shows that Jesus is God or equal with God.
Summaries and Final Conclusion:
Part 0
All dictionary quotations define the term "equal" as needing one to be compared to another.
Part 0A

Barton Stone: Equality implies plurality; and one is not equal to itself. If God be one infinite spirit
without parts, and if there be but one infinite and true God, then there cannot be another equal to him.
This is the language of consistent reason; but if revelation speaks differently, reason must humbly
submit.

Part 1A

Deuteronomy 14:1-2
Deuteronomy 32:8
Hosea 1:9-10
Luke 3:38

Moses tells the people they are Sons of God

According to the Sons of God
Children of the living God
Seth the son of Adam, the son of God

There are several other passages that show certain groups of people as being sons of God including
Adam.
Part 1B

Deuteronomy 32:1
Isaiah 64:8
Malachi 2:8
1 Chronicles 29:10

Is this the way you treat the LORD, is he not your Father and creator?
Yet you O LORD, you are our Father
Have we not all one Father
David said "O LORD God of Israel our Father"

The OT said several times that the LORD God is the Father of all people.
Part1C

Mathew 5:16 + 48
Mathew 6:1
Luke 6:36

Jesus tells the people that God is his and their Father
Jesus continues repeating that God is their Father
Again, Jesus tells the people that God is their Father.

There are many passages in the NT where Jesus tells the people that God is their Father, his Father,
and ties them together with himself by saying "our Father" in Mathew 6:9 and "we worship" in
John 4:22.
Because Jesus had told the people, including the Jews, that God was their Father they could also
call God "my own father" as Jesus did. They would then be accused of blasphemy by the mistaken,
misinformed Jews who through their lack of understanding would then want to put them to death
also.
Clearly none of the thousands of people hearing this would be equal with God because God was
their Father.
Part 2A

Mathew 3:17 God said "this is my son."

Mathew 17:5 God said "this is my son."
Mark 14:61-62 Are you the son of the Blessed one? " I am," said Jesus
Mathew 27:43 the people quoted Jesus as saying "I am the son of God."
God said Jesus was His son, Jesus said he was God's son, and the people said Jesus was God's Son.

Part 2B

Hebrews 5:5 Today I have become your father

John 17:5
Father glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world began
Romans 15:6 Glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God, Jesus and Paul all say that God is the Father of Jesus. There was a day when Jesus was not the
Son of God.

Part 2C

The six similarities and five differences referred to here each individually signify that Jesus is not
God. Together the evidence is overwhelming.

Part 3A

Isaiah 40:25 God asks "who could be compared to Him?"

Isaiah 46:5
God asks a rhetorical question knowing that there is none equal to Him
If God insinuates that none are equal to Him, then that includes Jesus.
If Jesus is God then he is not equal to himself because he is himself!

John 14:28
1 Cor 11:3
equality

The Father is greater than all which confirms no equality

Jesus says he is less than the Father which confirms no equality
After Christ has returned to heaven, the head of Christ is God which confirms no

God the Father is greater than Christ the Son both during Jesus' life on earth and now that he is
back in heaven, which confirms no equality
Part 3C

Where are the bible passages that say a son is equal with his father?

Part 3D

If the Jews had a law in place for such a statement then obviously there must have been many
others that had claimed to be a Son of God. Was this law in place because these previous
claimants had thought that they were the creator of the universe? Surely not! It was in place
because the claimants were claiming some sort of high authority which the early Jews had outlawed
to such an extent that the penalty was death. It is preposterous to imagine that any of the previous
claimants, or any of the previous Jews, had actually considered the claimants to be YHWH God. If
the Jews had believed any of the claimants to actually be God, then they must also have believed
they had previously killed the eternal God on numerous occasions which again is unthinkable. No,
the previous Jews had killed people that they had considered liars, their viewpoint was wrong
before and it was wrong now.

Part 4A

Romans 13:1 All authority comes from God

Mathew 18:18 Jesus was given authority by God
Because there was a point before he had all authority he cannot be God who always had authority.
Because Jesus was given all authority by God, he cannot be God who doesn't need to be given
anything.
Jesus is not equal or co-equal with God for these reasons.

Part 4B

There cannont be equality between Jesus and God if Jesus submits to Gods commands
Jesus cannot be God if he might not remain in Gods love through not obeying commands

Part 4C

There is not equality between Jesus and God if Jesus has to submit to Gods will.
Jesus has a different will but submits to Gods will, God cannot have two different wills

Part 4D

There is not equality between Jesus and God if Jesus is a servant and God his master
Jesus is a servant of God, God is not a servant of himself

Part 5A

God puts all things in position for Jesus, Jesus cannot be God if he needs this doing for him

Part 6:

1 Cor 15:24 If Jesus is God he would not give the kingdom back to God at the end of times.
Vs25 God is not given the responsibilities to reign
Vs25 If Jesus is God he doesnt need God to put all his enemies under his feet
Vs27 God put all things, except Himself, under Jesus. This is while they are both in heaven, their
positions could not be switched. God is in does the placement of all things, Non God recieves.
Vs28 Here we have all powerful God and Jesus who is not all powerful but is in subjection to God.
After Judgment Day, Jesus will be made subject to God. "Made" and "subject" are not words that
could be directed at an all powerful God.
This passage was written several years after Jesus had died and returned to heaven, and is referring
to the position and hierarchy of Christ and God at the end of times. God is in authority over Jesus
the son, not the other way around, and no equality. At the End of Times Jesus will still be under
God, Gods subject. God is above Jesus now, always has been and always will be.

Part 7:

This interpretation of Psalm 8:1-9 and Hebrews 2:1-18 shows that equality with God is in direct
opposition to their real meaning. If you have an opposing view, please let me know as I am unable
to find anything substantial in my research.
However we interpret the relationship between Psalm 8 and Hebrews 2 it seems that God makes Jesus
who Jesus is. They make specific and clear differences between God and Jesus, Jesus is certainly not
God and is definitely not his equal

Part 8

There is a linked in depth analysis of John 5:18 which shows that there is nothing in it that says that
Jesus is God

Part 9

Philipians 2:5-7 has a linked in depth analysis which reveals that there is nothing in that passage
that shows Jesus to be God, or to be equal with God.

Final Conclusion:
The term "equal" is in regard to two distinct things being compared with each other. There are several problems that
make it biblically impossible for Jesus to be equal with God and be God. Equality implies plurality; and one is not
equal to itself. Equality implies duality when we all agree that God is one and not two.
People are sons of God, the OT says that God is the Father of the people and Jesus tells the people in the NT that God is
their Father. Comparatively Jesus is the Son of God, and God is the Father of Jesus. The similarities and differences
between people and Christ on their own show that Christ is not God.
God says none are equal to Him, and Christ says that God is greater than he is. This was while Jesus was on earth and
after he is back in heaven.
There are no bible passages that say a son is equal with his father, outside of the possibilities of John 5:18 and
Philippians 2:5-7 which are analyzed elsewhere showing that they do not show Jesus as equal with God as some
mistakenly think.
The laws that the Jews/Pharisees were applying to Jesus were non-biblical and have no support, they had been wrong
on numerous previous occasions and were wrong now. Jesus claimed to be the Son of God which is what he was and is,
nothing more. When Jesus called God his Father did that mean he thought he was equal with Him? Not when he had
said that his Father is greater than himself!
Because there was a point before he had all authority he cannot be God who always had authority, and doesn't need to
be given authority as He doesn't need to be given anything.
There cannont be equality between Jesus and God if Jesus submits to Gods commands, or if Jesus might not remain in
God's love.
Jesus is a servant, God is not a servant.

God puts all things in position for Jesus, Jesus cannot be God if he needs this doing for him
Jesus is subject to God at the end of times, he will not be equal to God at that time.
The bible evidence on the subject of Jesus being equal with God is overwhelmingly against such a possibility.
Therefore he cannot biblically be God.
