The teacher will read the book The Name Jar in a read aloud and have a
discussion on how the characters are good friends. They will then do a show and
tell with a partner and their partner will share what they brought in with the
group.

previous lesson/activity
It is important socially and emotionally that children have good strategies for
making friends and being able to share something about themselves with their
friends.
This will be a 30 minute lesson.
Launch- 5 minutes

Group share- 5 minutes
Children will be able to share something about their family/ culture with a friend,
and the student will be able to identify a friend and something that is special to
that friends family/culture.

The language objective is that the children will be able to state a key idea using
details during the discourse. Children should also be able to effectively
communication with their partner and with the group.

Procedures (step by
step)

Anticipatory Set:
Send a notice home with the children saying they should bring something
in by Friday (or for Friday) that is special to that child and relates to the
way that family lives. It can be cultural or related to something that is
important to the family. They should send it in a brown paper lunch bag. If
the family doesnt have a brown paper bag, thats fine, the teachers will
provide one but the item should be small enough to fit in a brown paper
lunch bag.
Make sure all the childrens names are on the outside of the brown paper
bag in the morning and either a number 1 or 2. Have the bags set off to
the side, preferable where the children cant see it.
When the lesson begins, have all the bags set off to the side but ready to
put on the childrens desk at the end of the discussion so that the children
will focus on the book.
Instruction/ Mini Lesson:
Have the children sit down on the rug and introduce the story.
Read the story The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi
Have a discussion about what Uneheis friends learn about her and her
family (or her culture) and how they use that information to be a good
friend. How Joey was a good friend to Unhei?
While they discuss, have the assistant teacher put their bags on their
desks.
Independent Practice/ Guided Participation
Tell the students that when they go back to their desk the number 1 will go
first. They will say their name and what is in their bag and why its special

to them. They will have 1 minute to do this.

Then number 2 will go next and will have 1 minute to share.
Then they will share with the group. We will have a name jar and will pull
out a name and that person will share their partners name and what they
brought. This is our friend __________ and _________________ is special to
them.

Closure
Once everyone has shared, we will reconnect the activity we had just completed
with the book by reiterating the strategies we saw in the book The Name Jar for
forming good friendships and congratulate the students for being able to use this
strategy with their friends as well.
