LBSA Spring Kick Off 2015 Edition

Presidents Address

I was sitting in the third row, aisle seat. The room was crowded, but I was able to get a conversation going with the girl sitting next to me. We were both sophomores looking for a change, a smaller
community within the great UC Berkeley campus. At the time, I had no clue that attending the Spring
LBSA Kick Off was going to drastically influence my life in several aspects. My name is Natalie Nuez,
the President of LBSA, and I am thrilled to welcome you to the Latino Business Student Association
Spring 2015 Kick Off.

As I sat shyly listening to Cynthia Ruiz speak, the President at the time, I dreamed to someday be
able to contribute to something greater than myself as she was. I let my imagination wonder for a second about all that I could potentially accomplish within LBSA. I told myself, you will give that presentation someday. With the help of the friends I met here, the experience and knowledge I gained from
LBSA, passion, hard work, and a bit of elbow grease, I am able to stand here before you and achieve that
goal. So, by all means, let your imagination wonder about how you can make a difference in LBSA.

In LBSA, I took advantage of every opportunity and through it, I was able to travel to Washington DC, Florida, receive internships, job offers, and scholarships from top companies, meet my best
friends and boyfriend, and give my dad the joy and pride that a daughter can give a father through her
success. As a senior starting my last semester at Cal, I can say with all confidence that LBSA has given
me the best college experiences that I could have ever asked for.

I thank LBSA for bringing me here and for giving me yet another great opportunity to meet all of
you. This year, as President, there are 3 goals I would like to focus on to move LBSA forward: diversity
among our sponsors, Junior and Senior retention, and a strong academic presence. We had a successful
last semester, gaining 4 new sponsors, hosting the first annual Scholar Dinner, and welcoming the most
new members weve had so far. I hope to continue our success
into this semester and I encourage you to partake in moving
LBSA adelante. This semester, we are piloting a new LBSA
structure, planning our first Facebook office visit, and hoping
to give out a record amount of scholarships to our members.

As you move around the room this evening at the LBSA
Kick Off, remember that those whom you meet today may be
an influential person in your life tomorrow. I look forward to
seeing you often this semester.
LBSA President,

Natalie Nuez

competition each year serving as a mentor for the UC Berkeley team. Vanessa graduated from the HAAS
Business School with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She was active in LBSA since her
freshman year and previously served on the board as VP of Professional Development.

Member Spotlight: Daisy Esparza

As a freshmen, I was unsure of what I wanted to major in, but
I knew I wanted to work in the non-profit sector. After joining
LBSA and meeting older members and alumni who graduated
from Haas, I realized that Haas would provide me with enormous
opportunities. More than anything, I wanted to get into Haas, but
at times I would feel disillusioned and would contemplate
whether I should even apply. However, LBSA inspired me to
believe in myself. To my complete surprise, I was admitted to Haas
2 years ago. I honestly can not believe that I am finally graduating
this semester. LBSA has provided me with opportunities that have
led to a full-time Advisory Consultant position at Deloitte. I am
strongly grateful for the students, alumni, recruiters, and faculty
members that have contributed their time and energy to LBSA. I
urge all LBSA members, especially new members, to take
advantage of LBSAs endless opportunities. I encourage older
members and alumni to help through mentorship and
participation in LBSA. Thank you LBSA! Lets make this semester
one full of growth, inspiration, and long-lasting memories!

Members of the Month

Every month LBSA recognizes and awards
a general active LBSA member. Anyone can be
qualified by attending the majority of the
workshops, contributing to various committees,
and obtaining the most points for the
specific month. Just as LBSA member of the
month, board member of the month is earned
by a current board member who goes above and
beyond their positions responsibilities, attend all
LBSA events, and is a ready to help.

For November, Brenda Rocha, Director of
Marketing, and her mentee Waki Gojo both
received members of the month.
Congratulations!

As the semester starts know that
anyone and everyone can be LBSA member of
the month. So, go a get and diverge yourself in
what LBSA has to offer you and give it your best
because at the end hard work pays off.

Winter 2014 Highlights

At Cal Athletics, my Event Management Externship was not a typical business
externship. I was able to participate in the efforts to improve the athletic events
by being a secret shopper, taking notes of what should be improved such as
signage and service from a fan point of view. I went to my first Womens
basketball game, in which Cal took the victory. And from that single game, I
learned all about what happens behind the scenes. Prior to the game, i had the
oppertunity to see why it was important for these games to be successful and
enjoyable to its fans. Through my externship, I was able to sit in on meetings
between the staff and was able to pitch ideas and suggestions for an improved
service experience. There are so many different aspects of managing an event,
which involves communication between every participant of the game
experience, not just the people in event management, but also in fan experience,
media, and more. For me, being able to greet fans and help them at the events
with other student workers were especially fun as I was able to interact with
others. After completing the externship, I decided to apply for an event
management position thanks to the wonderful experience that I had and the
skills that I learned. I encourage all freshmen to participate in an externship
next winter break. Externships are available in a wide range of interests and all
over the United States. Externships are short, but you learn so much and it can
give you insight in a specific career as well as broaden your career and interest options. So, take advantage of these
opportunities and I wish you all the best!

The Discover EY Diversity Leadership

Conference was an exhilarating
experience where 151 students from across
the United States, and
international students, gathered in New
York City to participate in multiple
activities and speeches hosted by EY partners and associates. We heard the stories
of several EY associates that
motivated students to strive for success
and encourage diversity in the
work-field. In particular, I was inspired by
EYs Americas Director Ken Bouyer who
said, Dont be happy just to be here.
Always strive for more. The conference
also involved group projects like
developing and selling your own
product, and team-building skills like the
scavenger hunt in Grand Central Station. The conference attendees and I were also given the opportunity to
explore New York and participate in a cruise that passed the Statue of Liberty. The Discover EY
conference was a great experience and reveled to students how EY, an accounting firm,
can build a better working world.
