This paper aims to give a theoretical elaboration to the phenomenon

known as civil society and the challenges that it faces through the
consolidation of democracy. We put emphasis on ethnicization
in particular as a threat to liberal democracy. The paper also
emphasizes the major debates and specifics of the civil society in
Macedonia.

Abstract
At the end of the 20-th century, civil society as a theoretical and as
a normative model was used to interpret the transition from the old
totalitarian regimes to democracy in Central and Eastern Europe.
On a normative level it was an ideal to which the actors who started
the transition to democracy strongly tended toward. On an empirical
level it was a set of actors, civil initiatives and activities which were
meant to create active citizens, who would engage in the changes
in social life, which the transition brought. Their main goal was to
create strong civil awareness, as the basis for the creation of the
so called "demos". Civil society actually represented a school for
all of the non-governmental actors, dissidents and civil initiatives
which, while winning the public space were also developing the
awareness needed to create negative freedom (freedom from), as a
predecessor to positive freedom (freedom for).

Abstract
Regarding this paper, our interest will be focused on the historical
and political analyses of the conditions that caused the emergence of
radical Islam in Southeast Europe. Therefore, our attention is aimed
towards the status of non-Muslims in the Ottoman society, by which
we will simply explain the circumstances and conditions that covered
the period of the 19th and the beginning of 21st century. Concerning
the major processes that occurred in Southeast Europe after the two
World Wars, there were numerous war conflicts, territorial divisions,
population displacement, formation and disappearance of numerous
alliances and state-building. Numerous conflicts which appeared
under the influence of extremist ideologies have occurred in this
region.

Abstract
If we want to understand modern religious conflicts that are
happening around the globe, we need to dig deep in to the roots
of those conflicts. Fundamentalism is a term which we hear and we
use very often when we discuss these types of conflicts. Accepting
fundamentalism as a universal phenomenon should be viewed
through the prism of a particular society and culture in which it is
born and in which it exists. However, what is more important is to
understand the conditions in which this term was first born, so we
can make a comparison between what it meant then and what it
means now. Is fundamentalism inherently totalitarian, does it really
seek to remake all aspects of society on religious principles, as some
of the oldest western works on this subject suggest? Many scholars
and political scientists argue that the negative connotations of the
term, such as: extremism, militarism and fanaticism, make it totally
unsuitable for analysis, while others oppose this point of view. The
subject of Islamic fundamentalism attracted a lot of attention in the
West after the Iranian Revolution and continues to do so to this very
day. But, is it only a religious phenomenon or are we neglecting its
other nature?

Abstract
The debate around multiculturalism, which has grown into being one
of the most discussed issues in the 20thcentury, is one of the crucial
questions in the modern age from political, economic, social and
anthropological aspect. The question of the role and the influence of
multiculturalism is an inevitable part of many analyses, given the fact
that this concept is deeply rooted in all modern societies, regardless
of whether this concept is promoted or subsided in the society itself.
The increasing number of conflicts on all levels, the interethnic
tensions and violence imminently place the issue of multiculturalism
in the core of many debates, researches and policies. This paper
aims at analyzing the different aspects of defining multiculturalism
and examining the stances of this concepts supporters and critics.
Furthermore, this paper focuses on reviewing the different types of
multiculturalism and analyzing the group-specific rights, as well as
their demands with regards to preserving their group interests, as
defined by the political philosopher Will Kimlika. The final point of this
paper is positioning multiculturalism and its characteristics through
the prism of modern day problems and challenges on global level.

Abstract
Macedonian multicultural society is made up of a few basic elements:
ethnic groups, religious groups and globalizing transformations. The
authentic model of multicultural society, as it is perceived today,
leans on the principles of liberalism and democracy in correlation
with historical tradition, the level of its current political and economic
development and the impact of the modern globalization process.
The Republic of Macedonia, being a crossroad of civilizations during
the centuries, and a melting pot of numerous cultural traditions, has
the uniqueness of a multi-confessional, multiethnic and multicultural
environment, as a cultural, social and political habitat for a model
of inclusive democracy. With more than twenty ethnic, religious and
linguistic entities, the Macedonian reality heavily depends on the
multi-confessional, multicultural and multiethnic coexistence and
tolerance, resembling the interlocking and fermented presence in
many cultures and influences.

Abstract
The interest of this paper is focused on media analysis of world and
Macedonian press on the topic Radical Islam as a security threat.
The aspects of phenomenological and ontological wave of media
informing about the topics of Islam and its ideology are discussed in
this paper. A special review of the method that media treat women
in the radical Islam, and the informing of the Balkan media on this
topic are presented in the paper. At the end a short analysis of the
media informing about the most current expression of radical Islam
in the Republic of Macedonia is presented in the paper.

Abstract
The Republic of Macedonia its independence practiced in the period
of the nineties, when separating from the Former Yugoslavia. Ten
years later, in the Republic of Macedonia interethnic inconsistency
appeared, which also bore the prefix inter-religious, primarily because
both of the sides concerned in the conflict although belonging to
different ethnic and religious groups. Although it was widely common
to desecrate religious buildings on both sides, in no time the heads of
the two largest religious communities in the Republic of Macedonia,
did not made effort to make joint condemnation of such vandal acts.
The role of the religious communities in the creation of coexistence
in the contemporary Macedonian society was large, namely, every
religious community helped further in the development of the
society, but in two parallel worlds, without mutual help in the process
of homogenization of the already divided society along ethnic and
religious lines.

Biographies of the project participants

Ivanka Dodovska, PhD, is assistant professor

at the Faculty of Law Iustinianus Primus,
University Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje,
at the Political studies and the Studies of
Journalism. She teaches the following subjects:
Contemporary European and Macedonian History
(XIX XX century), History of Diplomacy,
Political History of the Balkans, Religious
Movements in Southeast Europe and the Status
of the non-Muslims in the Ottoman Society. She
is the author of more than 30 international
papers published in national and international journals and
textbooks. She is a member of the editorial board of the electronic
journal Proceedings, published by Macedonian Political forum Skopje.

Ivan Ivanov iis born on 09.2.1991 in Skopje.

In 2013 he graduated in Political Sciences, at the
Faculty of Law "Iustinianus Primus" in Skopje.
Currently he is on postgraduate master studies
at the Faculty of Law "Iustinianus Primus" in
Skopje - Applied Policy. He is a founding member
of the Institution of Civil development and
analysis "Respublika", whose primary purpose is
to promote civil society. Since the establishment
of the institute to the present, he has participated
in organizing several panel discussions, including
the most important project so far "Month of Civil Society." In 2013
he was elected to the board of the Institute "Confucius" in Skopje.
Currently, he works on projects related to the challenges of civil
society in the modern world.

Stanislav Cvetkovski is born on 21.01.1985 in

Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. He graduated at
the Faculty of Law Iustinianus Primus at the
St. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje
at the Department of political science in 2007.
Currently, he is a postgraduate student at the
Department for Political Science Applied
Politics. Since 2009 he has been working at the
Embassy of the Republic of Slovakia in Skopje.

Sara Al-Bander is born on 26.04.1992 in

Skopje. At the Faculty of Law
"Iustinianus
Primus" in Skopje she received her bachelor
degree in Political Sciences. She is a member of
"Respublika - Institute for Civil Development
and Political Analysis" as part of the Law School.
In 2013 she worked on a project called Civil
Lyceum - Month of Civil Society, realized in
collaboration with the Embassy of the United
States in Skopje.

Martin Buzalkovski was born on

11.03.1992 in Skopje. He is a student
of Political Science at the Faculty of
Law Iustinianus Primus in Skopje.
Founder and member of the Institute
for Civil Development and Political
Analysis Respublika within the
faculty. In 2013 he worked on a project
called Civil Lyceum Month of Civil Society realized in collaboration
with the embassy of the United States of America in Skopje. He has

also worked on smaller projects like: Body Language, Introduction

to Chinese Politics, as well as the making of a couple documentaries
for the needs of the Department of Political Science.

Ivana Atanasoska, MA in Political Science,

was born on 27.03.1987 in Skopje. She holds a
Bachelors degree in Political Science attained at
the Faculty of Law Iustinianus Primus-Skopje.
She has also received a masters degree in
Political Science at the Faculty of Law Iustinianus
Primus-Skopje; her thesis was titled Raoul
Girardets Myth of Conspiracy Theory in Forming
National Identities: Is It Applicable to the
Macedonian Case? She has been active in the
NGO sector during the past decade, and among
other activities, she served as a President of Ivanovs School of
Leaders Alumni Association and Public Relations coordinator for the
Macedonian Political Science Forum (MPF). Her significant experience
in the NGO sector can be shown through her active participation in
organizing as well as attending many national and international
events such as seminars, trainings, workshops, academic conferences
etc.

Liliana Lazarevska was born on 14 February,

1989 in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, and has
received a bachelors degree in Political Sciences
on the Sts. Cyril and Methodius University
the Faculty of Law Iustinianus Primus in 2011.
Currently, she is a student at master studies on
the Faculty of Economics at the same University.
She works in the Holocaust Memorial Center for
the Jews of Macedonia as a research associate.

Katerina Neskova was born in 1981 in Skopje

where she lives. She works as a journalist in the
daily newspaper Dnevnik. Neshkova has a
long experience working as a journalist and as
an editor in a couple of Macedonian media: the
daily
newspapers
Vreme
and
Nova
Makedonija, as well as the weekly magazine
Forum. She was also the editor of one of the
first successful web portals forum.com.mk. As
a journalist, she works mostly on internal
politics, as well as the health and foreign policy
sectors. Neshkova has graduated in law and currently she is a
postgraduate student of international law and politics at the Law
Faculty Iustinianus Primus in Skopje. She has a certain working
experience in the Primary Court in Skopje and as well as in the
Macedonian Parliament.

Marjan Vuchkovikj, M.Sc. was born in 1988 in

Bitola. In 2007 he enrolled the Law Faculty
Iustiniaus Primus in Skopje, the Department of
Political Sciences. In 2009 he was elected for a
President of the Macedonian Political Science
Forum. In 2010 he enrolled master studies in
the field of Civil Society and Management of

Djenur Iseni, B.A was born in 1989 in

Kumanovo. In 2007 he enrolled the Law Faculty
Iustiniaus Primus in Skopje, Department of
Political Sciences. Since 2009 he has been a
member of the executive board of the Macedonian
Political Science Forum. In 2012 he enrolled
master studies in the field of Diplomacy and
International Relations.

Doc. d-r Oliver Andonov was born in 1971

in Skopje. He earned his BA degree from the
Institute of Defense at the Faculty of Philosophy,
the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in
Skopje. He works at the MIT University in Skopje,
Faculty for Security, Criminology and Financial
Control and at the same time he is in charge
of the Erasmus program and the international
collaboration at the university. He teaches the
following subjects: National Security, Defense
Politics, Conflict Resolution, Theories of Peace
and Conflicts, and Criminal intelligence. His primary field of
interest is the study of conflicts, defense risks and threats and the
implementation of defense politics. He is the author of two published
books: Early-warning - the Experiences of the EU and the Republic
of Macedonia and Basics of the Criminal Intelligence and Analysis,
as well as a large number of other writings.
