Today was the first day of intern orientation; all of the six interns were
gathered in a room to meet with human resources. After the necessary
paper work was filled out the new employees watched basic safety
videos describing safety in food service industry, and manufacturing
safety equipment. Later that morning we were able to meet with the
marketing team and begin going over all of the information about the
company and what to expect this summer. The day finished off with a
four hour IT training session in North Canton. During this first day I was
introduced to the type of culture that exists at Fresh Mark. The culture
is built around the products, and the pride of the company being based
in the United States. During the orientation meeting one of the first
pieces of information given, was that Fresh Mark manufactured all of its
products in Northeast Ohio.

The second day was much like the first except we were introduced to
the Frank Of Fun, a promotional hot dog shaped cart Fresh Mark uses at
events like dollar dog night for the Indians. We spent most of the day
learning how to set up and tear down the Frank Of Fun. In the
afternoon we were introduced to the costumes, Frankie and Hamlet.
Then sampled some of the produced we would be selling.

In the morning the interns found out that one of the girls suppose to
interning with us quit. Now were down to five, but we were told that
she would be getting replaced by somebody else. Today was the first
day we were introduced to consumer affairs. We were asked questions
that typical customers would ask us at events as well as going over key
product information. That afternoon we were allowed to tour the
Massillon bacon plant, I saw how bacon is made and I love it even
more.

Today was our first operation of the Frank of Fun, we served employees
from the corporate offices, the owner of the whole organization came
out to sample, and to check up on the interns. The event went well, all
the interns worked together well, and had a good time. This summer
will be busy but also very rewarding with a lot of great experiences.
This afternoon we toured the Canton plant where they make all of the
Sugardale hot dogs, pepperoni and some of the hams. Being able to
tour a manufacturing facility the size of this was very impressive.

Today was our first introduction to drivers training. To travel to events
we need to drive a Ford one-ton van, which is very large. Behind the
van we tow a small trailer. Our instructors name is Dusty he is a very

good teacher and made drivers training fun. I didnt have a problem
backing up the van with the trailer or driving it. I have experience with
driving larger vehicles. Today was a short day only an hour and half.
The weeks coming up will be very busy. It looks like I wont have a free
weekend until July 4th. Which is fine by me, having more work means
more money and of course more experiences.
May 20, 2015
Starting into the second week of the internship our supervisors had the
interns clean and load the Taste of Sugardale. This trailer is a kitchen
on wheels; it has a dishwasher, sink, refrigerator, grill, and an oven.
This is usually used to travel long distances and large events, for
example to other states and drives exceeding six hours. This coming
week Sugardale has events scheduled at Fishers in Canton. These
events are close to home so it should be nice to a feel of what Im
getting myself into. Most of the day was spent cleaning and loading
equipment into the Taste of Sugardale. I am very excited to start
working this summer.
May 21, 2015
Today was the first event of the year for the interns, Fishers located in
Canton, Ohio. Most of the summer the interns are split up into teams
of three for all of the events except Dollar Dog night at the Indians
game we need all hands on deck for that event. Ill admit I was a little
nervous to start the event I didnt know what kind of questions people

would ask me and if I was totally prepared. The set up for the Taste of
Sugardale is pretty simple. It is just a tent and tables to serve the
product. The weather didnt keep people away, it was a steady flow of
people all day. We sampled three products, our all beef franks, cheddar
brats, and pepperoni. Many people seemed to like our cheddar brats.
Personally my favorite is the all beef frank it tastes like a hot dog you
would buy at the ballpark or the racetrack. Most of the day I talked to
people and handed out coupons, I also helped people sign up for the
prize wheel and give out free samples. All of our samples are free,
sometimes people do not believe they are free, they must think it is to
good to be true. After today I feel good about the summer I think I
really going to enjoy this internship. The day was from 9:30 to 4:30 Ive
been pretty happy with my hours so far.
May 23, 2015
The four day event at Fishers was almost over this was day three and
my second event, I learned a lot from the first event and I want to
apply that to this next one. Working in an event marketing internship is
very interesting, it is definitely not for someone who doesnt like to talk
to people. One of the interesting things is getting to talk to people and
get their perspective on their community and how many of them buy
our products. The event was very similar to the last one, the location
was in a different Fishers located in a different area in Canton, the
people change but the job is still the same. I am beginning to see and

get a feel for the events and how they operate. The volume of people
we served was larger at this location. Today I spent some time on the
grill making hotdogs. Im not much of a griller so this was new to me. It
wasnt my favorite thing to do. I would of much rather interact with the
people I love hearing peoples stories and information about the
community. I already know a lot about Canton having lived so close. I
now realize I need to invest in a new pair of shoes, my feet hurt badly
after this event. We sampled the same products except instead of
cheddar brats we sampled smoked brats instead.
May 26, 2015
The interns got Memorial Day off but it was back to work the next day
for a very large event, Dollar Dog night for the Cleveland Indians. The
Indians are my favorite baseball team anytime I get the chance to go
to Progressive Field it is exciting. All six of the interns we working for
this event, we arrived at Massillon at 9:30 to load up the van and head
to Cleveland. We needed to be up at the ballpark extra early because
we were getting a small tour of Progressive field. The sampling started
at 4:30 at we got there at 1:30 we had time to kill. We ate lunch at the
Paninis downtown, then we decided to start setting up the Frank of
Fun.
The amount of people we saw was incredible even though we were not
in our usual location people still found their way to our tent. As interns
we needed to come up with a system to manage the volume of people.

We took an assembly line approach to the event. It seemed very

Fordist like. Some interns talked to the people and others prepared the
food. After a long day it was good to get home and relax but the
experience of a Dollar dog night was fantastic.

Todays event was at a Buehlers grocery story in Jackson. The day
didnt start off so smooth the group forgot a foam cooler to put the raw
product in to keep cool before cooking. Luckily the managers let us
borrow a plastic cooler filled with ice. It would have to work for today.
Another bump in the road we encountered was not having the product
ready to sample on time. This was our first time going out on the road
by ourselves, so there were bound to be some problems. This
internship feels a lot like the small groups and teams class offered at
Kent State University. All summer long I will be working with a group of
different people. Which makes it even harder than the class. In the
class you are put into a group and stay in the same group all semester
long. Each week Im working with a different group of interns, while I
know all of them, each person has a way of working that we have to
figure out as the event goes on. This was the case today, but after
another 11 to 4 sampling we pulled it off. The day didnt end so bad,
and we were able to gain valuable experience working by ourselves.

Pennsylvania is where the tour was headed today. The van left at 7 am
in the morning for a two-day trip into western PA. This was an
overnight trip, which I was particularly excited about. We arrived at the
event very early, which was nice because it left us plenty of time to set
up. Todays event was Hermitage, PA this is the first time Ive been to
this location. Hermitage is located right by the boarder of Ohio and
Pennsylvania about an hour and half away, not a bad drive at all. The
store is called Donofrios it seemed small, after we arrived we set up
really fast and had the product ready to serve in about a half of hour.
Me and the two other male interns worked well together, not saying I
dont like working with the other female interns, we just worked well
together. The day went fast and before I knew it we were tearing down
again. This event went smooth, the only problem we had was keeping
the product ready to give out. We saw a larger volume of people today.
Tonight we will stay in a hotel in near North Huntingdon PA.
May 31, 2015
This is the last day of our two-day swing in Pennsylvania, North
Huntingdon was the last location. The store was a Shop and Save, I
guess these are all over the area and are popular in Pennsylvania. With
the threat of weather in the area we decided to set up the Frank of Fun
close to the building close to the overhang. By the second day we had
this down to a science. I would unpack the van while another intern
when into the store and spoke to the meat manager and got the

product. The other intern would unload the trailer and started cooking
product to sample. Today we had a lot of people sign up for our
newsletter. The interns are given incentives when we have a certain
number of people sign up for the Sugardale Family Newsletter.
Unfortunately today we have some strong rain come through for about
an hour, fortunately for us we were under the overhang so our set up
didnt get wet. The humidity climbed very high after the rain making it
uncomfortable. By the end of the day we were ready to leave PA and
head home, after a three-hour drive we were there. I will admit I
learned a lot on this trip. Sugardale really trusts their interns to get the
job done. Nobody called to check on us, and we were not supervised by
and adult. Going forward I am looking forward to this internship
continuing this summer.
June 3, 2015
Not a very exciting day we had a travel day to Rochester New York. The
drive was about 5 hours, after our arrival the Fresh Mark employee that
was with us took us to the stores to scout the location. This is where
we meet the manager and he tells us where we can set up our Taste of
Sugardale fifth wheel trailer. It was a ten-hour day but most of it was
spent in car traveling. Tomorrow we start the first of four events in up
state New York at the area Tops Supermarkets.
June 4, 2015

Today was my first event on the Taste of Sugardale outside of Ohio. The
stores are called Tops Supermarkets, we will be at a total of four stores
during this trip. Setting up is very easy because the entire product is
cooked on the Taste of Sugardale. Only a tent, table and prize wheel
are needed for set up, so we had some time to get organized. This
area of New York was interesting, because there was a very diverse
group of people. It was interesting getting to talk to each of them. The
area of New York wasnt of the highest income level, historically when
we visit these areas I notice two things. One we see a lot of people for
sample, and two a lot of people are prone to stopping and talking to us.
I like talking to strangers Ive never met before who knows what you
will learn. It ended up being a smooth event with no hiccups.
June 5
Today the figurative hot dog train stopped in another Tops location in
Rochester. This event seemed to be going about the same until we
arrived at the store. The product we were suppose to sample had not
been ordered in. We had advertised the event that we were going to
serve the center cut bacon. This presented a real problem, before each
event we contact the store and visit them personally to make sure
everything is prepared and in order for the event to start. This
particular store was not prepared even after the proper measurements
were taken to ensure the smooth operation of event. Now we had to
change what we were sampling. My boss talked to the meat manager

to find out what product they had the most in stock of. Being able to
adjust and overcome certain obstacles is a part of this internship. Just
as in life live learned nothing ever seems to go as planned, always
have a back up plan. In this case we sampled the thick sliced bacon
which is a little different than our premium center cut. But after having
to make these adjustments the event continued on and we had a very
successful day handing out many samples, and meeting a lot of
people.
June 6
Today is day three at Tops in Rochester NY, unlike yesterday this
location was prepared and ready to work with us. The salesman for the
area stopped by to talk to us and meet us. He was very nice and
apologized for the mess up at the last store. This event worked out
very well, the weather was nice the people were friendly. So far on the
trip us interns were able to reach our Sugardale Family newsletter
goals of 35 sign ups. For the interns we have incentives to hit our
marks with the newsletter. For the smaller Frank of Fun events we need
about 25 sign ups to hit our mark. This summer we have exceeded our
expectations on the sign ups. Our bosss have been pleased with the
production of the events.
June 7
Today is our last day in Rochester NY. I would of never believed in my
life I would have had to go to Rochester but it was an experience. So

far this whole internship has been a great experience. The one thing I
will say however is that we do the same thing over and over again so it
can get very repetitive, but I think our work schedule keeps us moving
to different locations and helps breaks up the idea of doing the same
thing day after day. After the event we had a 5-hour drive home, which
wasnt actually to bad. When we drive to these locations we take a
company car, which is nice because it is a newer Ford Taurus. I never
was much of a traveler but I think after this internship is completed I
will be so used to traveling that I may even want to do it more often.
June 9
This was my first office day at the Massillon head quarters I would be
lying if I said I wasnt a little nervous. Ive never worked in an office so
this was a new experience for me. First my boss had me call several
stores to make sure they were prepared for events happening later in
the week. Many of the stores were fine with having the set up right and
having product ordered in, however there was one store that wasnt
prepared at all. I had to explain what needed to be done and how much
product they needed to have ordered in. Next I changed some of the
graphics for our posters we send to the stores before the events take
place. Later in the day my boss asked me to research to event tile
flooring and steel nametags that can be worn by our employees. I had
to make a report up and send it to him by the end of the day. Most of
what happenes in the office was basic intern work, for example I went

and got gas in the company car and van. I mailed some flyers out and
filled out information requests.
June 11
After finishing up in Rochester, NY the next sampling I was scheduled
on was a four-day trip into the heart of Pennsylvania. The locations are
Johnstown, PA, Ridgeway, PA, and New Bethlehem, PA. Wednesday was
a driving day, not much happened other than I drove the entire three
hours into PA. Today was the first event in PA, Johnstown, PA is an
interesting place it is literally located inside of a valley. We drove
through the mountains on very curvy roads, then all of the sudden you
come out of the mountains and boom you are right there in the town.
Everything seems to be on a hill. Luckily our store was located on flat
ground. The event with off without any problems, we saw a high
volume of people and successfully signed up many people for the
Sugardale Family Newsletter. Tomorrow event will be located outside of
Johnstown, I hope we can see a lot of people tomorrow as we did today.
Whenever we see a high volume of people it makes the day go by so
much faster.
June 12
The event today was located at Ideal Market, this store was in the
middle of nowhere. I think we saw about 45 to 50 people all day. This
was by far the longest day of this internship. I now understand that
there will be days like this one. I hope not many though. The store was

small and seemed to be the only grocery store for miles, which you
would think you be busy, but it wasnt. Today wasnt a bright day but
we did it and got it done. I guess sometimes thats just what you have
to do in the modern work place today, just put your head down and go
to work. The way I thought, it personally the company is paying me to
be here I might as well do my job the best I can do.
