A distributed database (DDB) is a collection of shared data spread across a network of computers. Data fragmentation breaks data objects into segments stored in different locations. Horizontal fragmentation contains subsets of table rows, while mixed fragmentation combines horizontal and vertical fragmentation. A fragmentation schema describes how data is logically partitioned. Data replication generates copies across sites for availability and performance. Distributed concurrency control manages simultaneous access from multiple users. ODBC and APIs provide standardized interfaces for applications to access and request services from databases and operating systems.

1. Distributed Database (DDB) A logically interrelated collection of shared data (and a
description of this data), physically distributed over a computer network. 2. Horizontal Fragmentation Consist of a subset of the tuples of a relation. 3. Data Fragmentation allows you to break a single object into two or more segments or fragments. 4. Mixed (Hybrid) Fragmentation Consist of a horizontal fragment that is subsequently vertically fragmented, or a vertical fragment that is then horizontally fragmented. 5. Fragmentation Schema a description of how the data is to be logically partitioned. 6. Data Replication the process of generating and reproducing multiple copies of data at one or more sites. 7. Data Distribution - what values a variable takes and how often it takes these values. 8. Distributed Concurrency Control - the concurrency control of a system distributed over a computer network 9. Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) - provides a common interface for accessing heterogeneous SQL databases. ODBC is based on SQL as a standard for accessing data. 10. Application Program Interface (API) by providing all the necessary building blocks, it is easier to develop a program; specific method prescribed by a computer operating system or by an application program by which a programmer writing an appliacation program can make requests of the operating system or another application.
