Standards Assessed:

CT&PSS4: The student demonstrates skills in fluency and flexibility to solve problems or
create new products.
CT&PSS5: The student develops original ideas, presentations, or products through
synthesis and evaluation.
HOCTS7: The student examines an issue from more than one point of view.
HOCTS8: The student separates ones point of view from that of others.

Learning Objectives:

1) Students will create an original product that demonstrates their ability to apply
their knowledge of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry to a real-life situation.
2) Students will synthesize their previous knowledge in a creative way to solve the
problem at hand.
3) Students will examine an important scene from more than one point of view.

Movie Madness


Imagine that a Hollywood producer has decided to make a new Roll of Thunder, Hear My
Cry movie, and you were chosen to head the project. Design the movie poster that you
would use to advertise the movie and write a critique of the movie.

Part 1: Movie Poster
1. Draw and color your poster for the film on a full page of white paper. Include:
a. An image or scene that is important to the novel
b. A made-up tagline for the movie that reflects the plot and tone of the novel
c. Three of real-life actors you cast in the movie and the characters they will be
playing

Part 2: The Written Critique
d. Your critique must include 3 parts:
i. Part 1 must summarize, in your opinion, the most important event or
scene from the novel from Cassies point of view. What will be the most
important part of the film? Then, develop an alternate version of this
same scene from a different characters point of view. You should use 1st
person POV in your summaries.

ii. Part 2 must summarize the main characters in the movie. It should also
explain who the real-life actors are that will play the main characters.

This part should also include one aspect of STEAL characterization to


justify why those actors were chosen.

iii. Part 3 includes an original poem that is going to be read by the narrator
at the end of the movie. The poem should reflect the emotions/feelings
of the story. The poem should also include 4 different types of figurative
language.

o Writing includes the poem that the narrator is going to read at the end of the
film ___
o Poem reflects the emotions/events of the story ___
o Poem includes 5 different kinds of figurative language ___

GRAPES

Goal: Your task is to create an authentic film proposal that demonstrates your ability to
synthesize and apply your knowledge of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Role: You have been chosen to produce the new film adaptation of Roll of Thunder, Hear
My Cry.

Audience: You need to convince the movie studio that this film is worth producing.

Product: You will develop a visual and written film proposal so that the book-to-film
transition can be a success.

Expectation: A successful product will demonstrate knowledge of figurative language,
characterization, point of view/perspective, as well as the ability to synthesize all this
knowledge and apply it to your performance.
