Subject: Analysis of Cover Letters and Resumes
The purpose of this memo is to complete two jobs applications for two
different jobs and explain the reasons about each piece of information
mentioned in both cover letter and Resume. I write the analysis of the
job application with starting with the job description. I learned from the
job ad what they are looking for and what this job looks like from
different websites. I learned about the companies I am applying for and
the qualification they need. Secondly, I wrote about the Audience and
the people who might interview me. It was not easy to know them by
names but I searched to know about the employees in those two jobs
to get sense of what they expect from me. Finally, I wrote about the
Rhetoric Analysis to describe what I wrote in the cover letters and
Resumes for both jobs.

Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research:

Job Description:

Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research is one of the greatest places for
water, environment and energy researches in Middle East. They have a
lot of achievements in those three fields because of their professional
workers who came from the best universities in the world. The job I am
applying for is the Research Assistant for energy, which will make me
work under this job for four years before promoting to the next job that
I dream for which is Research Associate. Basically, Research Assistant
should do at least four projects in a year about the energy. Research
Assistant job is to test how good you are in doing research about the
energy subject, which I learn a lot through my academic studies in
Penn State. Based on your hard work, Research Assistants can be
promoted to be Research Associate and will be given a scholarship to
study abroad for achieving Master Degree in the field you were working
in. For example, if I succeed in doing good researches in energy as
Research Assistant, I will be sent to the U.S. to study Master in the
nuclear safety.

Audience Analysis:
Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research was established in 1967. Its role
is dedicated in improving three fields of national importance that are

water, environment and energy. KISR specializes in finding solutions for

the current problems concerning environment and water and finding
new sources of energy to use in Kuwait. Today, KISR has partnership
with international institutes to exchange knowledge and expertise. It is
also a home for more than 580 researchers and has more than 100
laboratories to work in.
KISR strives to make the environment clean and ensuring the
importance of using underground water for the environment. It also
studies the new sources of energy and whether or not it is suitable to
use in Kuwait. For example, KISR is currently studying the possibility of
building nuclear reactors in Kuwait. KIST established a national
commission for nuclear energy to take care of this study. The current
president is Maha al-Jasser who is reading the job applications from
students and interviewing them. Therefore, mentioning the projects I
have done concerning the nuclear rod safety is essential to be in the
application.

Rhetoric Analysis:
In my resume for the Kuwaiti Institute for Scientific Research, I decided
to mention my education at the top to point out that I have two
degrees to get the audiences attention. Then, I mention relevant
courses that I took in Penn State to the job I applied for. For example,
one of the important courses that is related to the nuclear reactors
safety is heat transfer course. By taking this ME course which is
required for my second major; I have been more able to understand
how the heat transfers from the core of the nuclear reactor and why
there is a gap around the core to reduce heat. I also mentioned
Radiation Detection and Measurement course since this course makes
me know what particles that causes radiation and which detector is the
best to measure the radiation in the reactor accurately. For experience,
I have not done much in the nuclear energy field so I decided to
mention the six-week program that I took with them about energy last
summer and my final nuclear project design. Then, I mentioned my
awards to point out my academic excellence in Penn State like getting
the second best design show in last spring. At the end, I mentioned my
skills in codes that I have learned for the Engineering and also the
codes I have used for the nuclear rod safety for my final project.
In my cover letter, I decided to mention my final nuclear design and
the company I work for in this project. Working with Areva Company for
my final design makes me realize that there is a partnership between
Areva and Kuwaiti Institute for Scientific Research as my sponsor told

me. I also mentioned some of my projects that I did for ME courses as

groups since strong communication skill is very important for this job.

Schlumberger Oil Company:

Job Description:
Schlumberger is the largest company in the world in the oilfield
service. It produces oil and gas in 85 countries in the world. They have
branches in the Middle East where I belong. The job I am seeking to
obtain for is in Texas, which I will learn how to use the technology and
apply it in the workplace. The position I applied for is Field Engineer
where it is not an office work. Field Engineers are service
representatives and their job is working in equipment and repairing
them. They also work for oversee locations so they adapt to expect to
work in any location they are asked for. They directly work with clients
so business and communication skills are required.

Audience Analysis:
Two brothers Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger established
Schlumberger Company in 1926. The company focuses on using
engineers designs and applies it in the workplace. They employ more
than 115,000 people in 85 different countries. They are looking for
hardworking and ambitious students who satisfy the clients needs.
Field Engineers directly deal with the clients so problem solving is
needed here.
The company formers CEO is Andrew Gloud in Texas who is a British
Businessman. He worked in Aramco, which is a Saudi Oil Company and
in King Abdullah University. This means that Andrew has an experience
of workers that came from Middle East. I tried to know about the
people who will interview but there are too many employees, which
make it hard to come to a conclusion about who will interview me. But I
am sure that they are rich in engineering and communication
knowledge. I prepared for that in my cover letters to mention
everything they might ask about.

Rhetoric Analysis:

In my cover letter, I decide to focus on some projects I have done

through my academic studies. Since this job asks for ME graduates, I
decided to focus more in my Mechanical Engineering with talking about
my second major in less detail. I talked about the machine design class
project where we build a vacuum cleaner using SolidWorks program.
Then, I talked about Vibration course project that I used more than
1220 lines in MatLab code to design the serpentine built. More so, I
talked in one paragraph about the two codes I have learned in the
nuclear rod safety to show them I have experience with too many
codes.
Since I do not have much experience in oil companies, I decide to focus
more in my education. I put my education in the top and mention that I
got Deans List for three times out of 7 courses until now to show them
I am hardworking. Then I talked about the relevant courses I took and
took more space on that. For experience, I mentioned that I strong
communication skills when having experience with the Kuwaiti
Association at Penn State. For Skills sections, I wrote about the codes I
have learned and related to the job. In the awards section, I wrote
about the awards I have got from the ministry of higher education like
scholarship and the awards of my projects that are related to the job.

Dear Mrs. Al-Jasser,
I am writing this letter to apply for the Research Assistant position for
the new project of building nuclear reactors in Kuwait. This job is
offered for students who have a B.S in Nuclear Engineering, which I will
have in Fall 2015. I believe that my academic excellence and work
experience will help me to perform well in this research position.
At the Pennsylvania State University, I have studied Nuclear and
Mechanical Engineering. I have learned a lot about how the reactor
works, as Penn State is one of the few universities that has a nuclear
reactor for experimenting and studying. We have learned about the
different types of reactors and the different generations for each of
them. My final nuclear project is working with the Areva Company that
is a French company in the U.S and our project is about the safety of
the nuclear rods.
In my final nuclear project, I studied about FRAPCON code that is used
to measure the temperatures in the reactor core and take time to do
that. As a result, Areva Company decided to create a new code that is
TRACE and tests the results by comparing it to the FRAPCON. I used
what I learn from ME and connect it to my nuclear project. I decided to

use the root of square sum in Excel to determine the percent

improvement to make modifications in the new code.
In Mechanical Engineering, I have taken a lot of courses in structural
design and analysis and written many reports in those subjects. I also
have taken classes in the heat transfer subject that will help in the
study of the nuclear reactors safety.
Outside of school, I have participated to develop my communication
and leadership skills by establishing the Kuwait Student Association
with my fellow Penn State Kuwaiti Students and I was the VicePresident in 2013. Our work is basically to organize weekend activities
to build a sense of community. We also help the Kuwaiti students find
suitable apartments once they arrive. This improves my
communication skills with the association members in order to
organize the work.
I hope that my academic success and my extracurricular projects will
make me a valuable Research Assistant at your institute. If you would
like to schedule an interview with me, I can be reached at (352)-8705809 at your convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
Abdulaziz Helal
