Lesson Plan Analysis and Reflection

1. Context
Skill: Grammar
Teaching Point: Partitives
Level: Intermediate
Number of Students: 11

2. What worked well and reasons.

I think that the first presentation part, teaching countable and uncountable nouns,
worked well because I could give students clear and brief definitions for each item and
explain the idea of uncountable nouns with two bottles of water as an example. As for
the definitions, I tried to explain the nouns at hand briefly: countable nouns are things
that you can count, and uncountable nouns are things that you cannot count or divide
into separate elements. Moreover, I wrote the aforementioned definitions on the board
so that students can take notes on their handout. In order to elaborate on uncountable
nouns, I prepared two bottles of water. I proved that water cannot be counted by actually
drinking some water from one bottle in front of the class, showing that the amounts of
two bottles are different, and saying that what students count is bottles. As I expected,
students seemed to understand the concept of uncountable nouns well.

3. What did not work well and reasons.

In the production part, I asked students to draw a picture of the inside of the refrigerator,
tell products in it to other students, and guess which picture is whose one in groups;
however, some students hesitated to draw a picture because they thought that their

drawing was not good. Consequently, I had to keep encouraging them to draw a picture,
and the step took much time than I expected. Although I devised the activity to utilize
students art intelligence, some students were not happy with that. In addition, since I
forgot to tell students not to show their pictures to others, they saw some of the pictures.
Therefore, the step to guess which picture is whose seemed easy. Even though some
steps of the part did not work well, the main step to practice the target language worked
smoothly, as I planned.

4. What changes would I make if I were to teach the lesson in the future?
If I were to teach the lesson in the future, I would make three changes. First of all, I
would include more examples of countable nouns so that students can learn about the
aforesaid nouns more. In the handout that I created, I only have four countable nouns
while there are twelve uncountable nouns; therefore, I would add eight more countable
nouns in the handout. Secondly, in the production part, I would show my picture of the
inside of the refrigerator as an example. As I mentioned above, some students were
reluctant to draw a picture. By showing my example, I think that the task becomes easy
because students can have a clearer image of what they are going to do. Finally, in
dividing students into groups, I would make students sitting next to each other divide
into different groups so that the activity of guessing which picture is whose one
becomes difficult and more fun.
