Communication:
All academic information including the homework schedule, spelling list, test
schedule, project rubrics, etc. will be communicated through the class website
(http://mslloydsthirdgrade.weebly.com) and through the weekly newsletter that
goes home every Monday.
Morning routine:
Students are expected to get breakfast on the go before they enter the classroom.
Once to their locker, they are supposed to put their backpack away and come into
room silently. There they will find morning work to complete.
Ending Morning work:
Around 8:30 every morning, students will walk to the carpet for the daily morning
meeting.
Morning Meeting:
The class morning meeting begins at approximately 8:25 8:35 am every morning
on the carpet, and consists of a time of greeting, sharing, group activity, and
morning message. The morning meeting helps to build a strong classroom
community of learners that support each other.
Pencils:
Only yellow number 2 pencils are allowed in the classroom. If a students pencil
breaks during the day, he or she has permission to go to the designated pencil area
in the room, put their old pencil in the broken pencil basket, and take another
pencil from the sharpened pencil basket. Students are supposed to do this
silently, quickly, without talking to the teacher or a neighbor, and without using the

pencil sharpener. At the end of the day, the student with the job of pencil
sharpener sharpens all the broken pencils to get them ready for the next day.
Cleaning / organizing desk: All students are expected to clean and organize their
desk every day before they leave.
Folders and notebooks: All students will keep their books and folders in their
designated crate at the front of the room.
What to do if finished early on an assignment: In our classroom we always have
bonus problems available for students who finish early. Students are expected to
work on the bonus problems while their classmates complete their assignment.
They may also choose a book from our classroom library.
Student jobs:
Every student is assigned a job that they will keep all week. Our classroom jobs
range from our horticulturalist who waters our plant- to our recess gatherer, who
reminds students when its time to line up from recess. Each student is expected to
do his or her job to the best of their ability. It takes every student doing his or her
job to the best of their ability to make our classroom run smoothly. Teamwork makes
the dream work!
Take a break
Throughout the day, I may ask various students to take a break. Unlike the time
out procedure that was for punishment, taking a break is not for punishment. This
has been thoroughly explained to students during the first week of school. Taking a
break is simply a way to help each student get some time away and gain a better
sense of self control when it is needed. I typically give students a silent hand signal
when it is time to take a break, and when it is time to return to their seat. Students
know that when they are asked to take a break, they are supposed to go to the
designated area quickly, calmly, and silently, and take the time to cool off and
process. Students may conference with me regarding why they had to take a
break at a later time during the day.
Grading Scale:
93 100: A
85 92: B
75 84: C
70 74: D
0 69: F

Going to the restroom:

There are 2 designated restroom breaks during our day. Students may also use
the restroom during their lunch break. Other than that, students can give me a
silent signal three fingers held up to indicate that they need to go. They will sign
out each time they leave the room and return.

Lining up at the door:

Students know that when they line up at the door, it is to be silently, and they are to
be standing one square apart.
Behavior Communication: I use the behavior management system called Class Dojo.
Class Dojo is an online program that is linked to your e-mail address, so that you
receive an alert each time your child is given a point or each time a point is taken
away. This is so you can stay updated regarding your childs behavioral progress.
You may look at additional information on ClassDojo at www.classdojo.com.
Examples of positive points include: turning in homework, arriving to class on time,
helping a student, lining up silently, etc. You will receive a personal Class Dojo code
at the beginning of the year which you will use to gain access to your students
individual behavior report. In addition to communicating behavior via Class Dojo,
your student will take home a folder every Wednesday where I give each student a
conduct grade along with their graded papers.
Computer Resources: Currently third grade students at John P. Freeman participate
in Istation, a reading program that monitors a students reading comprehension,
fluency, spelling, phonological awareness, and vocabulary. This program retests
students every month in order to get an accurate idea of their progressing reading
level. The program also alerts teachers to potential reading challenges a student
may be experiencing. Students will also participate in the i-ready program, which is
designed to monitor students mathematical abilities and design online lessons that
cater to the particular level of each student.
Literacy Work Stations: Students in my classroom will regularly participate in
Literacy Work Stations, where they will practice the skills taught in class in an
engaging way.
Class Bathroom Break Procedures:
When students line up next to the bathroom, they are supposed to be two squares
apart. The hallway as well as the bathroom is also a no talking zone. Students will
learn the following acronym that describes how they should be standing in the halls:

H- Hands to your side

A- All eyes forward
L- Lips zipped
L- Legs walking safely
S- Stick Together
Labeling papers:
For organizational purposes, each student in our classroom is assigned a number
based on their last name. Every day, on every assignment, students are supposed
to label the top of their paper with their first and last name, their number, and the
date. Please encourage your student to do this on all assignments.
Newsletter:
Every Monday students will take home a third grade newsletter with important
activities and events listed, the standards covered that week, as well as the test
schedule for that week. It is very important that all parents read the newsletter to
stay informed on what is going on in third grade. This information will also be
posted on our classroom website.
Conflict Resolution: Inevitably, there will be several times when several students
have disagreements with each other. The procedure for handling conflict is as
follows: The students will be asked to handle the conflict respectfully on their own
first. If the conflict cannot be handled respectfully, that is when the teacher needs
to be involved. At no point is a student allowed to put their hands on another
student in an attacking way, as classroom and school rules explicitly state that this
is strictly forbidden. It is imperative that all parents support this policy in order to
ensure that the classroom is a safe place for all students where conflict is resolved
in a healthy manner.
Recess Procedures: Students must walk to the playground until they get on the
grass. Once on the grass, students may play. After 20 minutes, students will be
called. When I blow the whistle once, students know that they are to line up in the
designated order to walk back to the school building.
Homework folder:
Each student has a homework folder that they will take home every night and return
the next day. Inside the homework folder, students have two pockets labeled stay
at home and return to school. Please take out and read all papers on the stay at
home side every night. Students will place their completed homework in the
return to school side.

Parent Notes/ Dr. Notes / Tardy Slips / Absentee Forms

If your student has a note for me, a tardy slip, a doctors note, or an absentee form
to return, they will place this note in the plastic basket on my desk. I will collect
these documents every day from this location and turn them in to the office as
necessary.
Consequences and Rewards:
Students are expected to adhere to the three rules they created together on the
first week. If a rule gets broken, I believe in the following actions to correct the
behavior:
Logical consequences you break it, you fix it.
Temporary loss of privilege for the moment, the day, or the week
Reparation making amends for something done
Rewards include a good note home, lunch with the teacher, homework passes, and
prizes
Silent Signals: To decrease classroom noise and increase efficiency, students have
silent signals they are expected to use all throughout the day, every day. The silent
signals are as follows:
1 finger: I have a question
2 fingers: I need materials
3 fingers: I need to go to the restroom
4 fingers: I have an answer
5 fingers: I need immediate attention
Hands waving: silent cheer given by classmates to a student after the student is
called upon or answers a question.
SLANT: This acronym stands for Sit up, Listen, Ask and Answer Questions, Nod your
head, and Track the speaker. Before beginning a lesson, I may announce SLANT,
and students are expected to adhere to this stance so that I can ensure that I have
100% attention before beginning a lesson.
Ending the Day: Students are required to clean up their areas before leaving the
room. Cleaning up includes:

Making sure no materials are left underneath desk

All pencils, pens, markers, and erasers are in supply box

No loose papers in crate

Consequences for unfinished work / homework: When a student forgets to turn in

his or her homework, I take away 1 class Dojo point
Classroom Library: Our classroom library contains books sorted based on content.
This library is available for all students during designated times. Procedures will be
taught on how to handle books. Students are not allowed to take books home
without permission.
Turning in lost items: There is a designated place in my classroom for lost items.
Students are expected to turn in all lost items to this area, and to go here to find
lost items.
Visitors in the room: From time to time, there will be visitors in our classroom. One
student will be designated as the greeter as a classroom job, and the greeter will
be responsible for opening the door when someone knocks and greeting our visitor.
Fire Drill: During a fire drill students will be expected to line up quickly and silently.
Next we will proceed to the basketball court where we will wait until the all clear
signal from administration.
Classroom Noise Levels: An anchor chart is located on the wall inside our classroom
that describes certain classroom levels:
0 Silence is Golden Absolute silence. No one is talking
1 Spy Talk Whispering where only one person can hear you
2 Formal Normal Normal conversation voice
3 Loud Crowd Presenting voice. Everyone can hear you.
For example, if I say: voice level one, students, after practicing this procedure, will
know they are supposed to participate in spy talk.
Recess Procedures: Recess is scheduled every day for 20 minutes, except when
inclement weather strikes or on the day that students participate in gym class.
Birthdays: All parties have to be approved by administration. After your party
request is approved in the office, we can work together to designate a day and time
for the party.
