Tutorial 1
1. The system in Figure 1 is driven by pressurized air in the tank. What gauge pressure
p1, is needed to provide a water flow rate of Q = 80 m3/h. Ignore minor losses.

Figure 1.
Ans: 4.5 MPa
2. In Figure 2 the pipe shown is 150 NB cast iron and the pump supplies 50 kW to the
flow. What is the resulting flowrate? (Ignore minor losses)

Figure 2.
Ans: 50.5 l/s

3. The small turbine in Figure 3 extracts 500 W of power from the flow of water. If the
pipes are mild steel compute the flowrate through the system.

Figure 3.
Ans: 2.04 l/s
4. The system shown in Figure 4 consists of 1250 m of 125NB mild steel pipe, one 45o
long-radius elbow and four 90o long-radius elbows with two fully open gate valves. If
the elevation of point 1 is 120m below point 2, what gauge pressure is required at
point 1 to maintain a flow of 10 l/s into the reservoir?

Figure 4.
Ans: 11.8 MPa
5. The system shown in Figure 5 consists of 40 m of 50NB mild steel pipe, 25 m of 150NB
pipe and 60 m of 80 NB pipe. There are 3 90o elbows and 2 fully open gate valves, all
flanged. How much energy is extracted from the turbine if the flowrate through the
system is 5 l/s.

Figure 5.
Ans: 1.16 kW
