Welcome
to
Biotechnology!
Biotechnology
is
a
lab
based
genetics
course
that
is
designed
to
help
student
receive
college
credit
by
enrolling
and
earning
concurrent
enrollment
credit
via
Utah
Valley
University.
It
is
designed
to
only
be
taken
after
a
successful
completion
of
a
high
school
level
biology
course
and
ideally
chemistry.
Concurrent
Enrollment:
To
receive
UVU
credit,
you
must:
1.
Apply
to
UVU
(35.00,
one
time
fee)

Description
This
is
a
Concurrent
Enrollment
Course,
offering
both
high
school
credit
through
American
Fork
High
School
and
college
credit
through
Utah
Valley
University.
Credit
from
this
course
is
transferable
to
all
colleges
and
universities.
Contact
the
receiving
institution
for
how
the
credits
will
be
applied.
Explores
careers
in
biotechnology
with
emphasis
on
central
dogma
of
biology,
DNA
techniques,
applications
in
biotech,
and
bioethics.
Examines
forensics
and
human
cloning.
Includes
lab
work.
Throughout
the
semester,
you
will
gain
experience
in
basic
laboratory
techniques,
lab
math,
and
scientific
writing.
Prerequisites
This
class
is
available
to
all
high
school
juniors
and
seniors
in
good
academic
standing.
High
school
prerequisites
apply.
There
are
no
college
prerequisites
for
this
course.
Objectives

Topics

The
overall
goal
of
the
course
is
to
provide
career
exploration
in
biotechnology
fields.
Objectives
include:
1) Introduce
a
myriad
of
biotechnological
applications
and
associated
bioethics
2) Provide
hands-on
laboratory
and
critical
thinking
experience
Encourage
entrepreneurial
creativity
by
providing
an
opportunity
to
develop
and
market
a
potential
biotechnology
product.

method

this
class
is
primarily
lecture-based.

Homework:
Homework
is
the
life
blood
of
this
class.
You
will
simply
have
to
put
forth
significant
effort
outside
of
class
time.
This
will
mainly
consist
of
READING
the
required
text,
and
completing
the
designated
assignments.
You
should
be
spending
roughly
1
hours
of
homework
4-5
nights
per
week.

FAILING
grade
for
the
course.

UVU

evidence
of
academic
dishonesty
may
result
in
a
failing
grade

the
course

disciplinary
