AP Environmental Science

Summer Assignment
Welcome to AP Environmental Science! Im looking forward to working with you this year. In order to
cover all the material for APES before the AP exam in May and to set the tone for the class, you will
need to complete a couple of math review problems over the summer. There are four parts to the
summer assignment. If you have any questions about the assignment or the class, please feel

Part I: Information Questionnaire Due in class on the first day of school (August 13th)

Part II: Remind Messages

Part III: APES Math Review Due by Friday August 14th
of the AP exam. You will need to review the concepts on the attached
pages and complete the practice problems on the provided answer sheet showing all work. NO
CALCULATORS are allowed on the APES Exam, so we will NOT be using calculators in class. You
should be able to work every problem on the review WITHOUT using a calculator. There will be a quiz
on the first week of school that covers this math review packet.
Part IV: Article Review Due by Friday August 14th

global warming, mining, land use, environmental issues, ecology, biodiversity, etc. Articles must be at
least 500 words and be selected from a reliable news source. The article must have been published
sometime this summer (June-August 2015). Your Article Review Assignment should be typed in 12
point font, using Times New Roman font and double-spaced. The format for the Article Review is as
follows:

Summary: In 250-500 words, write a brief summary answering the following questions
-What are the key points made in the article?
-What are the points of view presented about this issue?
Personal Reaction: In 250-500 words, write a personal reaction clearly stating your opinions and/or
reflection on the article. You can offer potential solutions, compare it to another environmental
problem, ask questions about the article, or simply reflect on the articles content. Do not simply write,
This article was very interesting/good. Make sure you explain any statements or reactions. You can
answer the following questions
-Does the article teach you something new?
-Does it support or refute other information you have heard or read? Explain.
*A copy of the article must be attached to the review. Please be very careful to use your own words
when summarizing.
