Overview
Welcome to Mr. Bishops 7th grade Language Arts class. Throughout the
school year, we will cover many Language Arts Common Core Standards,
including reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. This focus
helps all students at VPA with the process of increasing important literacy
skills. Students will encounter many different fictional and informational texts
throughout the year as we work on reading comprehension and analysis. My
class will also focus on many different types of writing, including
argumentative, narrative, and reflective writing. A great deal of time will be
spent reading and writing in the classroom as our students work their way
toward becoming independent, resourceful learners.
Classroom Rules
The Oseberg team has a list of common rules (team norms) that will be
implemented throughout the year:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

Be respectful.
Come to class prepared.
Always follow directions.
Always do your best! (The Viking way)
Keep it R.E.A.L. ( respect, effort, attitude, leadership)

Classroom Expectations
We hold very high expectations for all of our students at Valley Prep.
Students are expected to display full effort and personal initiative when it
comes to academics and character building inside and outside of the
classroom. Failure to adhere to the rules and expectations may result in
actions including student-teacher conferences, seat reassignment, behavior
contract, parent contact, detention, ISAP, and/or administration/counselor

referral. My goal is to create a classroom environment that is conducive to

learning, and any disruptions will not be tolerated.
Grading scale
All grades will be posted promptly into the Infinite Campus database
following submission. This database can be viewed by parents through the
parent portal component of Infinite Campus. Students can also view their
grades whenever they want using classroom computers. Posted grades will
reflect student engagement, progress, and mastery in accordance to the
concepts covered in the Language Arts classroom. The following scale is
implemented for all students:

ABCDU-

90-100%
80-92%
75-79%
70-74%
Below 70% is considered not passing

Reading Logs
All students will be required to keep a weekly reading log. I ask that each
student read for at least 20-30 minutes each night, reflecting on what they
have read. It is important that students make connections between what
they read and what they experience in daily life. These reading logs will be
due on Friday of each week. Each student will have 5 reading log entries by
the end of the week. I understand that some students are struggling readers,
and I will differentiate the reading log process in order to accommodate such
students. The reading log process will not begin until after the first couple
weeks of school.
Classroom Library
Along with the school library, my classroom will contain a library with
multiple genres from various authors. Students will be able to check out
these library books after consulting with me and signing them out in a
classroom binder. Any books that get lost shall be replaced by the student or
his/her parent/guardian.
Absentee policy
Students who have missed school days must check my daily classroom log to
see what work they missed. The log contains the agenda for each day, and it
shows whatever work the students may have missed. Each student will have
as many days as they were absent, plus 1, to complete all makeup work. It is

also important that parents/guardians help make sure their child doesnt fall
too far behind. Be sure to call or email me for any absentee concerns.
Agreement: As indicated by signing below, I have read and understand Mr.
Bishops 7th Grade Language Arts Syllabus.
