Course Description:
Chemistry is often considered its own branch of
science focusing on atoms and their interactions
with each other and the world around them. All
branches of science are concerned with these
topics however in chemistry students will be
focused on the structure of atoms and the
implications and associated phenomena.
Students will be embarking on a journey that
begins with the theories of atomic structure and
ends with the complex and elegant molecules
and substances we have today.

demonstrating understanding of units/mathematics and concepts.
Quizzes will be given throughout the year ranging from 5-20 points. Quizzes
will be given throughout the year at the instructors discretion. Some quiz
dates will be announced others will be spontaneous (POP quizzes). Quizzes
are used as preparation for exams and when compiled can serve as another
study guide.
The final exam for each semester will be cumulative, and worth 200 points
Make-up exams and quizzes will be allowed pending instructor approval.
During certain units, projects will be assigned. These will require the student
to illustrate and communicate theories and ideas covered in class. Projects
will include (but are not limited to) posters, PowerPoint, videos, etc. Projects
will be graded based on a rubric determined in class ranging from 25-100
points.
During certain units, research papers will be assigned challenging students to
analyze peer reviewed journal articles. Only selected academic databases will
be allowed to take data from. All papers will be submitted to
www.turnitin.com. Prior to submitting a final paper, students will be required
to submit a series of outlines which will be assessed by the instructor.
Classroom Policies
Tardy Policy
Student is considered tardy if not in the proper seat when the tardy
bell rings. Tardy students will receive a detention. If a student is
resistant to the issue of a tardy detention a dean detention will be
issued. Habitually tardy students (3 or more) further disciplinary action
will be conducted (ex. Conduct referral, Saturday detention, probation,
conference with the Dean, or suspension/expulsion).
Behavior Policy
o Students are expected to follow the Student behavior and Lab safety
guidelines at all times. These forms will be signed during the first week
of school.
Bathroom Policy
o You will receive 4 hall passes for the semester. These can be used for
bathroom breaks or retrieving items from the locker. Upon leaving the
room all electronic devices will be left at the instructors desk.
Food and Drink Policy
o No food or drink with only three exceptions. The first exception is
WATER WITH A CAP. The second must be due to medical reasons
such as diabetes and this must be brought to the instructors attention.
The last is for students on a rigorous weight gaining program. They
must have a note from a PMA coach or licensed personal trainer.
o During laboratory exercises food and drink is NEVER allowed. This is
because dangerous chemicals and sensitive equipment will be present.
Dismissal Policy
Students are to remain seated until the instructor dismisses the
class. Each student is responsible for their immediate area and will not be
dismissed until the area is left how it was found which will be pristine.
Students MUST walk upon exit of the classroom.
Disciplinary Policies
Communication
Parent-Teacher Communication
o Parents are the primary educators of their children. As an instructor it
is my job and passion, to support the parents in their role. It is
expected that constant communication is kept between I the instructor
and the parent(s)/guardian. No amount of communication can ever be
considered too much in my eyes.
Return this portion upon the following class meeting time in a Homework
fashion (yes, there is a specific way to do so *hint: refer to the homework
section*).
I have read the above syllabus and agree to abide by its contents. I also
recognize there is a 30 dollar lab fee that must be paid through SMART
Tuition by Friday 08/21/15 if not I will be billed.
