Tyrone and Cheryl LaValley

Serving as Your Missionaries in Cote dIvoire

News from West Africa

August 2015
I have completed my first month in Cote dIvoire.
It has been filled with a lot of new learning
experiences. Here are a few of the things Ive
learned:
Filter large amounts of water for drinking
and cooking.
Reconstituting powdered milk into a
drinkable substance.
Used a French labeled washer (we are
blessed to have it).
Learned how to string rope on the front
porch to dry the laundry.
Began to speak French so I can ask for a
baguette for lunch.
Attended
an
Annual
Conference
Extradinaire with 6,000 people.
Developed a liking of sheep and rice.
Travelled outside of Abidjan with an
international group of Sunday school
leaders.
Visited the Basilica.
I know I will have many more experiences and I
welcome each one. Together with God
anything is possible.

Scouting Ministry News

Last month I mentioned how ministry here is really about the relationships
that we are building. You trust us to extend your mission and we trust you to
support us through prayer and other means. We have continued this
relationship on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The Scout leaders in the USA
have answered the call to ship 40 Woodbadge neckerchiefs to my Badge de
Bois class in Cote dIvoire. The students could not afford the high cost of the
imported foulards from Europe or Kenya. Rather than ask for a cash
donation for overpriced merchandise, the American Scout leaders
shared from their own hearts, connecting one-on-one with the
Scout leaders here.

It was an eye opening experience to participate as a member of a

patrol in the Ivorian course. The Badge de Bois course has the same
academic classes as Wood Badge, but the execution is completely
different. The class was more like the NCO Academy at Fort Bragg.
Despite the differences, I was accepted as a fellow Scout leader.
We learned from each other. I also identified some minimum
standards that the leaders need to meet in order to make an impact
for Christ. I have submitted the improvement plan to the
Conference leadership for consideration.
I am preparing to leave for the village of Koube in the
Yamoussoukro Missionary District to teach spiritual formation
classes at the church construction project. This church is being
constructed by youth who are part of the Scouts and the Boys and
Girls Brigade. We will equip them to be missionaries in their own
country. Thank you for your donations which have made this
possible.

Childrens Ministry News

Greeting from Cote dIvoire:
Children from around the Yamoussoukro district attended a Colonie
Biblique. It is what we call a Vacation
Bible School in the United States. The
difference is the children stay overnight
for a week. Children range in ages from
five to fifteen years of age. They are fed
three meals a day, taught a
Bible lesson in the morning and
the afternoon, engage in songs

and games and provided daily
hygiene. Students are grouped
by ages and genders and assigned a Moniteur or Monitrice for
Childrens Ministry Trainer
supervision and care. It is a large undertaking for all involved. This
United Methodist Church
was one of the smaller camps. Another camp I visited had 700
Cote dIvoire
students attending.
I enjoyed meeting the
delegation of youth
volunteers from Ghana.
They helped lead the
games and songs for the
morning Bible lesson.
They are an energetic
group who love to hang
out and enjoy life.
.

I was privileged to visit the

Basilica while engaging in
Colonies Bibliques in
Yamoussoukro. I was with
the adult delegation from
Ghana. We enjoyed an
English speaking tour and
marveled at the beauty of
the Basilica.

How can YOU Assist the Mission in Cote dIvoire?
Your Prayers hold us up with an invisible hand. When you pray to God to protect and guide us your
prayers are heard by God and felt by us. God also uses this prayer time to guide you to support Gods
mission here in Cote dIvoire or in other places around the world.
Your Presence in your local church supports your congregation whose mission we share. Your collective
wisdom in Small Group Studies and Large Group Worship help shape the local church and the larger
mission.
Your Gifts help us do the ministry we have been called to do. Monetary donations can be made to the
Advance. Instructions are on the bottom of the sidebar on the front page of this newsletter. Involve
others in a meaningful fundraiser that mirrors the mission here.
Your Service here in Cote dIvoire will change you forever. Organize a team to help us build churches,
assist in the clinics or hospital, assist with clean water, or help in our education programs.
Your Witness is a force multiplier. When you tell others what Christ is doing here in Cote dIvoire, your
enthusiasm will be contagious. Involve childrens classes, mens groups, womens groups, Scouting
units, and Sunday school classes.
Remember your baptism vows and God will direct you from that point

Thank you for reading this newsletter and sharing in our mission to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ into
all the world. Without your support this mission would not be possible.
Please pass this newsletter on to others and pray that God will touch their hearts to join us in shared
missions around the world.

Bellas Corner
Bella has discovered birds and lizards by day and
geckos by night. She has found a few quiet
places to relax. Since the mission house is
completely walled-in, she is able to venture
outside for the first time in her life. She likes to
walk in the garden area. Her favorite nap place
is in Tys closet.
Bella opened her home to share the space with
Rico, a missionary poodle (canishe) whose
family was in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo.

Pictured below: Bella realizes that she can step out of the
window onto a seldom used air conditioner for a better look at
the birds.
