VAC2072 HIGHWAY ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT 3

2014

VERTICAL ALIGNMENT AND SUPERELEVATION

Objective: This assignment develops students ability to design the vertical profile and cross sections for a
given road alignment.
Students will work in pairs on this assignment but not with a student with whom you have worked on a
previous assignment in this subject.
A 400m length of rural road is being designed from point A as shown on the attached plan at scale 1:2000
(CH 100.00) through point B (CH 300.00), the TS to a 150m spiral transition to a +400m radius curve,
ending (for the assignment) at Point C at Ch 500.00 (not shown)
At point A the RL of the road is to be 37.70 with an existing grade of -2.0%. At point C the RL of the road is
to be 38.94 with a grade of +1.0%.
1. Design the vertical alignment of the road for a design speed of 110km/h. Draw an appropriate
longitudinal section showing lengths of all vertical curves and tabulate CL levels at 20m chainages from
CH100.00 to CH500.00.
(20 marks)
2. Design the superelevation development and draw the edge profiles on a centreline profile

(20 marks)

3. Determine and tabulate the cross section levels of points 1, 3 and 5 (shown below) at 20m intervals from
CH200.00to CH350.00. Note that the road has sealed shoulders
(10 mark)
4. Determine the earthwork quantities at 20m intervals over the length of the road. ( Pavement depth can be
neglected. Fill batters 3:1 , Cut batters 1:1 plus appropriate drain). Tabulate your calculations and results.
(15 marks)

5. The earthworks must be completed in 2 weeks and the equipment available are:
Excavators with bucket capacity 1.5m3
Scrapers with carry capacity 5m3
Dump trucks with capacity 15m3
Determine the number of each type of equipment required to complete the earthworks in 2 weeks.
Note all your assumptions made in your calculations.
(15 marks)
presentation 20 marks)

The Tender Box for this assignment closes at 2.00 PM Wednesday 24 September 2014 and counts for 10%
of the semester assessment. The use of road design software and spreadsheets are encouraged but the
assignment must be submitted on A4 with an A3 drawing folded to A4. Five marks will be deducted for late
submission on 24 Sep and 10 marks if received after 24 Sep. Submissions after 26 Sep may be rejected.
