What Its All About:

This class is all about getting you ready for college: by growing your reading level, by improving your writing
skills, and teaching you to read, write and discuss independently and critically. In the process, you are going to
read some amazing books (some that I choose, some that you choose), share your story with me and with your
classmates, become a discussion EXPERT, and figure out where you want to go in the future and how English
class can help you get there.

Community and Academic Integrity: Students are to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity in
accordance with CMS Student Code of Conduct.
Statement on Students with Disabilities: Accommodations will be made for students with documented
disabilities.
Make-up Work: Students have FIVE DAYS beginning the day of return to make up any missed assignments
due to absence. Otherwise, the grade may be recorded as a 40.
Recovery: Per North Carolina law, students cannot miss more than 10 days of school. Those who do, excused
or unexcused, must recover time lost after school or during Saturday Academy. Procedures for completing
recovery will be announced during the year.
Progress Reports: Progress Reports will be distributed every three weeks.
No Cheating/Plagiarism Policy: Knowledge is too precious too steal. I am not that old, its easy for me to
catch plagiarism. Id be happier with a C effort that is authentically yours than someone elses A+ work,
because that will result in an F for YOU.
Online Resources:
Dictionary.com/Thesaurus.com Online dictionary and thesaurus with sound for pronunciation.
Sparknotes.com Database of summaries of classic and contemporary novels and plays including explanation
of context, plot overview, character lists and more.
Teacher Resource: My only goal for this year is to make sure that all of my students are successful in my
class. If you are struggling or want to improve your grade, come and talk to me. We will work together to make
sure you are on the right track.
Parent Involvement:
Your parents and I are a team. I will call them to let them know when you are doing amazing things in class,
and I will call them when I have concerns. I will invite them to Open Houses, to Socratic Seminars, and to class
events. I hope that they will contact me whenever they have concerns or questions, or just want to chat. If
there are things you want me to know about how best to work with your parents or guardians, slip me a note or
see me after class.
The Bottom Line:
You are going to do amazing things this year. Let me make one thing clear, this is not a me vs. you
environment, we are a team. We all are too bright, too creative and too powerful to waste opportunities to
learn from each other. Believe me, we are stronger together than alone. I cant wait to see where this year
takes us.
