CHAPTER 6

INTERACTION BETWEEN CHEMICALS

Electrochemistry

Content
6.1 Electrolyte
Non-electrolyte
Relationship of freely moving ions in
electrolyte and electrical circuit
Conclusion

Electrolytes
Definition: Substances that can conduct electricity
when they are in molten state or aqueous solution
and undergo chemical changes.
Because they generally consist of ions in solution,
electrolytes are also known as ionic solutes.
Example: NaCl

Please notice what happen to the ammeter.

electrolytes
What made the needle of the ammeter moves?

10

Non- electrolytes
Definition: A substances that cannot
conduct electricity either in molten state or
aqueous solution.
Most covalent compound are nonelectrolyte.
Example: CCl4

Please notice what happen to the ammeter.

Non-electrolytes
Why the needle of the ammeter did not move?

10

The relationship of freely moving ions

in electrolyte and electrical circuit
When the electricity is flow to the electrode, positive
ions are attracted to cathode and negative ions are
attracted to anode.
The flow of electrical charge carried by ions in
electrolyte and electrons in the connected wire.
The electrolyte which has freely moving ions is able
to conduct electricity.

Please notice what happen to the ammeter.
