Objective
The student will
1. illustrate bilateral symmetry by drawing a preliminary sketch using
newsprint, pencil, & marker.
2. compare textiles from different cultures by listening and observing
using a docent tour.
3. design bilateral symmetry creating a dye resist design using cold
wax on cotton cloth.
Art concepts
How to design and create an Indigo resist & Identify several different global
threads.
Vocab
Applique- to put on, apply cut fabric pieces onto a layer of fabric
Resist dye-applying to prevent certain surface from dying
Indigo- blue dye
Shibori- Japanese word to embellish textiles by shaping/securing cloth to dye

Materials

Posters, premade examples, newsprint, pencils, black markers, 100% cotton
fabric, cold wax, small cup, wax paper, brushes, drying rack, handoutscrossword, fabrics for docent, Indigo dye, rubber bands, craft sticks, gloves,
aprons, detergent, water basins, clear plastic bags, take home instructions,
masking tape
Procedure
1. Intro: names & project
2. What we will be doing (indigo resist & docent tour)
3. Show examples-bilateral symmetry
4. Vocab lesson
5. Vocab pronunciation
6. Teacher demo sketch with marker
7. Hand out newsprint
8. Hand out pencils
9. Have students design bilateral design
10. When done, must have approval by instructors
11. Once approved, give marker to outline cotton fabric
12. Lay down wax paper under cotton fabric
13. Place sketch under wax paper and fabric
14. Demo how to apply cold wax to cotton fabric
15. Hand out cold wax in cups
16. Hand out brushes
17. Students put initials in bottom right corner first
18. Students trace design in wax on cotton fabric
19. Once done, must have been checked by instructors
20. Student hands cotton fabric to instructors to dry
21. Instructors places cotton fabric on drying rack
22. Students help other students to finish cold wax application

23. When all students completely done, or when time is up, begin
docent tour

36. Wrap tightly woven cotton fabric around craft stick, students follow along
37. Rubber band cotton fabric 1 time around craft stick, students do the same
38. Hand wrapped cotton cloth to instructor
39. Explain Indigo Dye bath process as instructors place into bathes
40. Explain length of time needed
41. Instructor drops wrapped cotton clothes into dye bath
42. Begin dye bathes
43. 5 min Indigo dye bath
44. While in Indigo dye bath, explain taking out of bath
45. Explain oxidation
46. Begin Jeopardy Game
47. Instructor removes cotton fabrics from Indigo dye bath
48. Explain oxidization process

50. Let cotton fabric oxidize
51. Explain rinsing the Indigo dye out after oxidizing
52. Hand out clear plastic bags
53. Write name on clear plastic bag w/ black marker
54. Hand out paper with take home instructions
55. Hand out 2 pieces of masking tape
56. Tape take home instructions to clear plastic bag
57. Once rinsed, hand back cotton fabric to students
58. Students place finished, washed cotton fabric into clear plastic bag
