TheEMDwillbreakdownasignalintoitscomponentIMFs.
AnIMFisafunctionthat:
1. hasonlyoneextremebetweenzerocrossings,and
2. hasameanvalueofzero.
Inordertodescribetheprocess,weborrowfromourposterthe
followingsection:

TheSiftingProcess
ThesiftingprocessiswhatEMDusestodecomposesthe
signalintoIMFs.
Thesiftingprocessisasfollows:
ForasignalX(t),letm1bethemeanofitsupperandlower
envelopesasdeterminedfromacubicsplineinterpolation
oflocalmaximaandminima.Thelocalityisdeterminedby
anarbitraryparameterthecalculationtimeandthe
effectivenessoftheEMDdependsgreatlyonsucha
parameter.
Thefirstcomponenth1iscomputed:

Inthesecondsiftingprocess,h1istreatedasthedata,and
m11isthemeanofh1supperandlowerenvelopes:

Thissiftingprocedureisrepeatedktimes,untilh1kisan
