Expectations for
Grade 7

U.S. History
Welcome to H-K Middle School 7th grade History. In this course you will engage
in studying the development of American History from the American Revolution
through the Civil War. The course will challenge your skill development in reading,
writing and critical thinking. Students will work independently but will also be
expected to work constructively in groups. The history curriculum will be closely
interwoven with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for language arts
and include a great deal of reading and writing. Organization, effort, and attitude are
keys to success in this class.

Character: There are five words that should be the focus of a students daily actions.
The words are acceptance, kindness, perseverance, respect, responsibility.
Please conduct yourself with these in mind.
Materials: You will to keep your handouts, personal notes, and other paperwork
organized. I will provide you with folders as needed, however many students prefer to
bring a three ring binder with dividers. We will read and write daily in class. I will check
your notebook periodically for a grade. I expect assignments to be recorded daily in
student agendas or a personal organizer. All class and homework assignments will be
posted on my web site through RSD17. There is an online textbook for home use, or
you can opt to be assigned a hard copy for home use. There are textbooks located in
the classroom for all students use and are to be treated with respect.
Personal Expectations: Dont be late to class. Be in your seat
with your materials (assignment notebook, pencil, homework, etc.)
out and working on what is instructed of you on the front board. If
this is a continual problem, it will be dealt with accordingly. Please
see me to schedule a time (after school/flex period) to meet to
answer any questions you may have regarding class and the
concepts being covered if you are unsure or need review. If you
miss a class, it is your responsibility to get the make-up work and
hand it in promptly.

Grading. Grades are assigned a number of points. They are broken into the three
major categories below per trimester. Formative assessments such as homework and
classwork are fewer points, but will occur 3-5 times per week. Summative assessments
such as tests and projects will make up the bulk of the grade. You will have time to
work, receive feedback and study for these assessments. You are responsible for
checking Power School frequently to keep an eye on assignments and grades.

Homework/Classwork ~ 20% (20-30 points each assignment)

Quizzes/Small Projects ~ 35% (40-60 points each assignment)
Tests/Large Projects ~ 45% (100-200 points each assignment)
Redo/Late Work Policy: If you earn a grade lower than a 70% on tests and large
projects you will be required to complete an alternate assignment to show
understanding of the concepts. You may be able to add a percentage of points on to
the original score if they show mastery of the concepts. If you wish to retake a
summative assessment, you must fill out an assessment notification form. This is
located in the course resources section of my website, or you can obtain one from me.
This shows that you have prepared for a retake and informed your parent about the
retake.
If you have late or missing homework assignments, class work, quizzes or small
projects, you will be able to attend a working lunch period or stay after school to make
up a percentage of points on the assignment to show mastery of the concepts. If you
do not take the opportunity to attend a working lunch or time after school you will forfeit
a grade for the assignment.
I will allow extensions for certain circumstances: sickness, family emergencies,
etc. You should have a note stating the reason and signed by your parent/guardian. If
you are absent and miss work, it is up to you to make it up. You should stay after
school or come during flex to make up work or get notes/class work that you missed or
check the school web site for assignments.

Please review this with your parent or guardian, sign below and
return the entire form. I can be contacted here at the middle school,
860-663-1241 ext. 3223 or email, kcardona@rsd17.org

Thank you.
