Survey Analysis
My sociology survey was comparing people who tip on carry out to people who do not
tip. My hypothesis is that more people generally tip than dont tip when they order a carry out
order. Carry out is when you call ahead to order a meal from a sit down restaurant and pick it
up. I worked two nights, Wednesday and Thursday, and tallied over all how many people tipped
and how many people didnt. I then did a survey asking some questions about reasons why or
why not someone would tip on carry out. I targeted three different age groups, teenagers(1119), middle age adults(20-49) then the older adults(50 and up). Also, I separated them between
genders.
From the data I collected at work, I received thirty one carry out orders total. For this, I
just tallied how many people tipped and how many didnt. I didnt separate it into any category.
My definition of a tip is any extra money added on to a bill that is over $0.00. Out of the thirty
one carry outs I had, twenty one people tipped me. Ten people didnt.
The survey I did was where the sociology part comes in. I had twenty three different
people of different genders and different ages from eleven to sixty eight years old. On the
gender side, ten out of twelve females say they tip and six out of nine males tipped. So, out of
my research, females tend to tip a little more than males. I targeted three different age groups
and I found that older adults tend to tip the most. Five out of the five older adults said they tip,
according to my survey. Next I found that middle age adults tip the most next to the older adults.
My survey showed that seven out of eight middle age adults tip. I then found that teenagers tip
the least. Only five out of the ten teens I had take the survey said they tip on carry out.
My survey had three more questions other than do you tip on carry out, yes or no. They
were: What % of the bill do you tip?. What is the tip based on? (If you tip) and Why dont you
tip? (If you dont tip). Six people said they tip 0% of the bill, three people said they tip 5-10% of
the bill, two people said they tip 10-15% of the bill, nine people said they tip 15-20% of the bill
and two people said they tip 20% or above. So, I found that most people tip between 15 and
20%. I asked the people who do tip, what they base it on. Ten people said its based on the bill
price, two people said its based on the service quality and four people said its based on the
amount of money they have at the moment. So, for people who do tip, I found that it mostly
depends on the bill price. Lastly, I asked the people who said they dont tip, why they dont tip.
Five people said its because they didnt know they had to on carryout. One person said they
never have money and zero people said they dont know. So, I found out that most people dont
tip on carry out because they didnt know they had to.
From all the surveying and data collecting I did, I found that my hypothesis was correct.
More people do tip than dont tip when they order a carry out meal. I also found out that most
people tip between 15 and 20%. According to my survey, most people tip based on their bill
price, if they do tip. If people dont tip, I found it is because they didnt know they had to.
