Rules of PowerPoint

By: Katie Plucker

1. The design template should remain

consistent and simple

Different backgrounds, fonts and colors = too distracting

and not enough focus on the content

Simplicity is key

2. Limit the number of words on each

slide

Too much wording is intimidating and students will lose

interest

Only include key phrases and essential information

3. Avoid special effects and flashy

transitions

They are too distracting, especially for young children who

get distracted easily

4. Use contrasting colors

Make sure to use a dark font on a light background and a

light font on a dark background

This ensures readability

5. Incorporate visuals

Use images and videos that go along with the content you
are presenting

Helps children to refocus their attention and gain a better

understanding of the content

Benefits ELL students especially

6. Make the font an appropriate size

Make it big enough for children in the back of the room to

see

Do not make it too big as to appear overwhelming

7. Limit the number of slides

If a presentation is too long, students will lose interest
