Short Answer
1. What is the difference between qualitative data and quantitative data?
Give an example of each.

4. What is the difference between science and engineering?

5. Why is it important to have multiple trials in an experiment?

6. What is the difference between a requirement and a constraint in the
engineering process?

7. Why should you have a control when you are running an experiment?

To answer questions 8 and 9, read and use the following engineering project:

Due to recent heavy rains, runoff from sediment in the mountains has been
collecting in the water at various beaches and polluting the water. Navina
and Kendra have received a grant from the Department of Land and Natural
Resources to stop the problem. The grant will only last for 6 months and is
for $40,000. They need to figure out a way to keep the sediment from
running down the mountains during heavy rains and entering the water at
the beaches. Use of natural resources, like planting trees and shrubbery to
reduce erosion, is encouraged, but all plants used must be native species.
The solution should also last at least 20 years.
8. List at least TWO requirements of this project. Be sure to use the
proper format for writing a requirement:
a.
b.

9. List at least TWO constraints of this project. Be sure to use the proper
format for writing a constraint:
a.
b.
To answer questions 10-13, read and use the following science experiment:
Ms. Bayne wanted to know if using a heat lamp would help increase chances
of hatching some gecko eggs she found in the classroom. She set up an
experiment where two eggs were left in the normal room conditions with no
external heat source and two eggs were put under a heat lamp that kept the
eggs incubating at a steady 32C. After 30 days, she found that none of the
eggs ended up hatching.
10.

11.

Choose the best hypothesis for this experiment:

a. I predict that only the eggs under the heat lamp will hatch.
b. I predict that only the eggs under the heat lamp will hatch
because they need heat to grow.
c. If gecko eggs are placed under a heat lamp, then they will have
an increased chance of hatching because gecko eggs need heat
in order to develop.
d. If gecko eggs are placed under a heat lamp, then they will hatch.
Why was the hypothesis you chose the best one?

12.
Which statement might you find ONLY in the discussion section of
her lab report?
a. The eggs were likely already dead before they were discovered
because they were laid by the gecko in the door frame in a busy
classroom.
b. None of the gecko eggs hatched.
c. Three of the gecko eggs were translucent.
d. The control group did not receive a heat source.
13.

Which group was the control group? Why?

14. Which group was the experimental group? Why?
