Konark Granite Company ___Environmental Management Plan| 3.0 Environmental Management Plan To sustain ecological balance and to check harmful effects of mining activity in leasehold area under consideration, environmental measures have been integrated into the processes of planning. Environmental management approach includes action to protect environment by using instruments, direct regulatory requirements or incorporating technological features. It provides the remedial solutions of the problems. 3.1 Air Pollution Control ‘The main sources of Air Pollution are at the time of jackhammer drilling and at the time of transportation of granite & waste, But this air pollution will be controlled to the ambient air quality standards by providing dust collector at drill site, Following measures shall be taken to mitigate the effect of mining operation over ambient air environment: 1. Blasting shall be carried by latest blasting technique and will adopt controlled blasting methods 2, Water shall be sprayed priorto blasting 3. Rock breakers shall be employed instead of secondary blasting 4. Water shall be sprayed on mined granite/overburden material prior to loading to reduce dust generation during loading operations Periodic maintenance of haulage roads 6. All overburden dumps shall be stabilized with legumes and grass to prevent the erosion ofsoil and arrest the dust emission during windy days. 7. Regular spraying of water by water sprinkling system. 8. The dust rising due to drilling will be controlled by covering the drill rods with cloth, dust excavators will also employed. 9. Dust masks shall be provided to all the workers. 2. Tree Samplings shall be planted! at the periphery of mining lease D.G.Set: One D.G Set of 120 KVA rating shall be installed. The DG set shall be generating power all be used as a stand-by in the event of power failure to operate the equipments and s or non supply of power by the APSEB. The DG set shall be housed in room having a height of 2m. D.G Set Stack Height Calculations: For emissions of the exhaust gases from the DG set, CPCB has given the formula for calculating the stack height. The stack height in the present case shall be: H=h+0.2xVKVA Where, 11 = Total height of stack in m above ground level ( GL) h = Height of the building above GL. in m where the DG set is installed KVA =Total generator capacity of the set in KVA H=2+0.2xV120 = 4.19 m say 4.2 mabove Gl. ‘The D.G set will be provided with a 4.2 m height of stack for the emissions of exhaust gases. 3.2 Noise Pollution Control The main sources of noise in mining activity are drilling, material handling machinery, loading equipment, ete. The haulage, machinery of drill holes generate noise However the noise level will be kept within the permissible limit, Following mitigation measures should be taken to control noise pollution: 1. The machinery will be maintained properly to reduce the noise. 2. Allvehicles and machinery will be properly lubricated and maintained regularly. 3. Speed of the vehicles entering and leaving the mining lease will be limited to 25 kamph, 6. Konark Granite Company Environmental Management Plan] «Part of the solid waste will be used for construction of roads and plantation. + No reclamation is proposed in the first five years mining period because, the mining will be continued to further depths and reclamation could be possible only after completion of mining up to the proposed depths. ‘© Soil can be utilised for reclamation of degraded area. © Weathered rock if it is sufficiently soft and devoid of rock fragments can be utilised for roads, filling of road side ditches, formation of approach reads to quarries, construction works etc. «Large and medium sized waste rock can be used as revetment for deep cut “stream sections from preventing from soil erosion. 3.6 Solid waste management Waste dumps, containment facilities should be planned, designed, and operated such that geotechnical risks and environmental impacts are appropriately assessed and managed throughout the entire mine cycle Solid wastes may be generated in any phase of the mine cycle. The most significant waste generating mining activities will likely occur during the operational phases, which require the movement of large amounts overburden and creation of rock waste 3.7 Measures to Improve Socio Economic Conditions ‘The benefits arising from mining is employment, housing, educational, and medical and transport facilities, fuel availability, economics, status, health agriculture is not significant because size of project is very small. However, it would definitely inerease the employment directly and indirectly in the project area. The state Government will get sales tax due to mining and selling of granite. 3.8 Occupational Safety & Health Management M/s. Konark Granite Company, wil take will take all the necessary steps to provide better occupational safety and health. In the event of any contamination, concemed authorities shall be notified immediately and appropriate corrective action in consultation with an approved consultant shall be Initiated, 3.9.1 Monitoring Strategy ‘The monitoring of various environmental parameters is necessary and is a part and parcel of the environmental protection measures. Monitoring is as important as that of control of pollution since the efficiency of contral measures can only be determined by monitoring, A well-defined environmental monitoring program would be employed with trained and qualified staff to monitor the ambient air as well as tack gas quality to check whether the quality of effluents is maintained within the permissible limits. Konark Granite Company Environmental Management Plan] 3.9.2 Ambient Air Monitoring As per MOEF there is a need to identify 3 ambient air stations at 120° angle keeping the main source in the center. ‘The ground level concentrations of suspended particulate, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the ambient air outside the project boundaries and in the adjoining villages will be monitored at regular intervals. Any deviation from. predicted/expected values will be investigated and nec ry action will be taken, 3.9.3 Noise Monitoring Noise levels in the workspace environment will be monitored periodically. If any deviation is observed neces: ‘ary corrective measures will be taken. Monitoring noise levels is essential to assess the efficiency of maintenance of schedules undertaken to reduce noise levels and noise protection measures. A good quality sound pressure level meter is es: nial for this purpose. This work can be handled by plant authorities themselves or by hiring services. Noise surveillance is for the benefit of the workers well being and to keep track of machine weat, 3.9.4 Micro Meteorological Observations The site will have a permanent a weather station installed within the premises. Meteorological parameters like dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature, wind speed, wind direction and rainfall will be recorded daily 3, .5 Monitoring of Water Quality Ground water near the project site will be routinely tested for its quality. No contamination of ground water and surface water is expected, However these waters will be periodically tested for any change of water quality. e effluents coming out of the process should he monitored regularly.
