Aspectos Prcticos de la Enseanza de Ingls I

Unidad 3
We will use the following topic from from ANEPs Programa de educacin inicial y
primaria: Biology, 3rd grade (p.204) as an example:
Los rganos de la planta y sus funciones.
- El sostn, la absorcin y el transporte.

Lesson 1
- What is SIOP and what is CALLA
- Content and language aims
- Thematic Units
- How to teach Science: a checklist
Reading:
- Familiariaze yourself with Echeverras book (have a look at the DVD as well)
- Read Echeverra (Chater 2, section on Content Objectives and Language Objectives)
- Read Chapter 1 in Gillespie (focus on pages 4 to 9)
- Have a look at the Thematic Unit example (sent via e-mail)
Homework:
- Read pages 243-244 in Teaching Science in CALLA. Become aware of some of the
features of the language involved in teaching the natural sciences
- Read Echeverria (Chapter 2, section on Supplementary materials and Adaptation of
content). Bring examples/ideas to class (a real object, printed material, a picture from
Pinterest, etc)
e.g.

Lesson 2
- Workshop on supplementary materials and adaptation of content: We will work with
your own ideas and materials and we will watch videos

Lesson 3
Microteaching: a 45-minute science lesson (ROMINA OLIVA and LIBER REDES)
After the lesson is finished, we will have a look at how this lesson could be part of a larger
Thematic Unit.
Homework:
Read Chapter 2 in Echeverria (Teaching Scenarios) and rate each teacher according to
SIOPs criteria. Then check your answers with the answers in the book.
Lesson 4
Microteaching: a 45-minute science lesson (CECILIA VIANA and CECILIA PAN)
After the lesson is finished, we will have a look at how this lesson could be part of a larger
Thematic Unit.
