Sulfur dioxide is a harmful, colourless gas with a displeasing odour. Burning of coal and oil
especially in power stations give off sulfur dioxide. Constant exposure to sulfur dioxide causes
breathing difficulties, bronchitis, pneumonia and even lung cancer.
Chorofluorocarbons(CFCs) are chemicals which are used in aerosol sprays, refrigerators, airconditioning systems and foam products. CFCs cause the thinning of the ozone layer in our
atmosphere. As the ozone layer gets thinner and thinner, more and more ultraviolet rays that
cause skin cancer and cataracts will reach us.
Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous, colourless and odourless gas. Incomplete combustion of
carbon or its related compounds produces carbon monoxide. Exposure to carbon monoxide
causes harmful effects such as headaches, brain damages or even death within a short
period.
Oxides of Nitrogen are poisonous gaseous compounds containing nitrogen and oxygen. These
gases are released into the air from the burning of oil and coal at high temperatures, power
stations, industries and exhaust fumes from motor vehicles. Constant exposure to the oxides
of nitrogen damages the lungs.
