Group Project Proposal (Group Index Number)

1 Introduction
Write one or two opening paragraphs to introduce the topic and task
that you are working on.

[By the way, this document is a word template that you can use to
work on your GPP. The formatting has already been done and all
you need to do is to replace the text with your own. If you use this
word template, the content page will be automatically generated for
you. To generate the table of contents, go to the table of contents
page, click on the content and you should see a grey area
highlighted over the contents page. Right click and then select
update fields and you are done…  Also, you can change the font.
But stick to neat fonts such as Arial, Times New Romans… avoid
cursive fonts please.

In addition, you need not follow this outline if you do not want. This
is really just a guide for you to see how one can structure the GPP]

1.1 Choice of Topic (Replace with your own,

E.g. Tsunami)
a. Briefly describe the emergency or conservation project that
you started with. Remember to include the key features.

i. For emergencies, remember to include the impact,

problems faced, and other important features of the
emergencies relevant to your project.

ii. For conservation, remember to include a description of

the project, why the need for conservation and the
impact or benefits of conservation.

b. Describe the lessons learnt from the emergency or the

conservation project.

i. For emergencies, remember to discuss in terms of the

problems faced in the response, aftermath and solutions
that worked and not worked. The key lessons must be
aligned to what you are going to set out to do in the
project.

ii. For conservation, discuss in terms of the need for

conservation, the lessons learnt in terms of factors
contributing to the success as well as strategies used by
the project.

1.2 Rationale for Topic

a. Discuss why is it important for you to learn from the lessons
learnt

b. Highlight the area of need that you are addressing

3
Group Project Proposal (Group Index Number)

c. Explain why the area is an important one for you to work on

1.3 Aims or Objectives of the Project

In this subsection, you highlight the key objectives of your project.
Tell people what you hope to achieve and briefly introduce the
proposed emergency or conservation that you want to work on.

Explain and discuss the following:

a. Why and how the emergency or conservation is similar?

b. What do you hope to achieve by applying the lessons learnt

from the previous emergency or conservation to this new one?

2 Similar Emergency or New

Conservation Project
Write one or two paragraphs to explain or introduce your similar
emergency or conservation project in greater detail. This is where
you begin to generate new ideas and show your analysis and
evaluation of ideas in terms of the strategies generated. These two
paragraphs set the stage for your development of strategies in
subsequent subsections and paragraphs.

1.1 Lesson – Strategy 1 (Use your own title)

You introduce the key strategies for dealing with the emergency or
conservation. It would be good to do the following for each of the
proposed strategies (not necessary in the order listed):

a. Why the strategy? Based on which lesson? What is the

problem you are trying to solve?

b. What is the strategy? Describe the approach or strategy

clearly. Who is the target? Describe clearly the outcomes of
each strategy.

c. How they work? How will your strategy achieve this?

d. Who is going to drive them?

e. What makes you think that it is going to work? [Feasibility

issues]

f. What are the possible challenges or problems? [Feasibility

issues]

g. How are you going to manage these challenges?

[Manageability issues]

2.2 Lesson – Strategy 2

Introduce the second strategy. Similar to the above subsection, you
should cover the key aspects mentioned. You will continue to

4
Group Project Proposal (Group Index Number)

include one new section for each lesson-strategy. The key is not to
aim for many strategies but to generate creative, insightful, well-
thought-through ones which is likely to show your analysis and
evaluation as well as generation of ideas. You may want to use
subsubsections to subdivide your points if necessary.

2.3 Lesson – Strategy 3

Introduce the third one if you have.

As above.

[These two sections are quite similar to your Preliminary ideas

except that you have no word limit. Yeah! ]

3 Methodology or Execution of Project

Write one or two paragraphs or even a flow chart or diagram to
BRIEFLY introduce your key steps to complete the proposed project.
Highlight the key areas for research and type of information needed.
No need to describe them in detail here yet. Leave it to the
subsections to do so. Remember, this is just an introduction to give
people a good idea of your approach.

[The next few sections may differ in the order depending on how
you want to present the ideas. Some people like to start with
primary research, some with secondary sources first. Some toggle
between the two. No matter what, it is important to be very clear
and systematic in your approach and make sure you have covered
all the possible grounds.]

3.1 Review of Literature (secondary research)

What information do you need to complete your project?

Why is such information necessary? What is it going to be used for?

List some of the possible secondary sources that you are going or
may refer to as part of your project. Maybe good sites (please
exclude Wikipedia if possible. I am sure you will have referred to
them but there are also many other good sites available.), good
books, journals, magazines, newspaper clippings, reports, blogs, etc.

Might be good to discuss the strengths, weaknesses of each of the

main sources and highlight how they provide different angles or
perspectives or information that you need. Highlight the areas of
gap that the information sources may fail to provide. [This is useful
for you to demonstrate your analysis, evaluation and can be later
used for your EOM]

Again, you can have subsections to make reading easier.

3.2 Primary Sources of Information

Based on the gaps highlighted during your gathering of information,
you can suggest possible ways to gather primary data or
information.

What information do you need that you cannot obtain from your
secondary sources of information? What are some of the ways that
you can use to obtain these information?

3.2.1 Surveys (if you need)

Why do you need a survey? What are you going to collect from the
survey? Why is the survey a good way to collect that particular
data?

Describe your population. Who are they? What are their key
characteristics?

Describe your sample. The size of sample, how you sample (aka the
sampling techniques that you propose to use), why you sample this
way etc.

Type of survey: online, face-to-face, multiple choice or free form?

The type of surveys used should match your purpose. Examples of
survey questions or even a proposed survey form is useful at this
point.

Again, you need to show awareness of the strengths and limitations

of your methodology, in this case, surveys. Please avoid cliché
things like “people may not tell the truth etc”. Your sampling and
survey design are supposed to minimize these problems.

Problems associated with the different sampling techniques or

survey types can be mentioned but you should try to tie in with your
purpose and explain the areas of gaps that it can address and those
that need another method.

3.2.2 Interviews (if you need)

Similarly, you may want to conduct an interview if necessary. Why
interview? Who? Why these people? What do they know that can
give you insights and how they can help you? What do you want to
know from them that will help you to complete the project? How can
they complement your information and data collected so far?

Things to consider include:

a. Questions?

b. Type of interviews

6
Group Project Proposal (Group Index Number)

3.3.3 Other Methods (if needed)

There are many other methods of gathering primary data.
Ethnographic methods and other qualitative research methods such
as observations, document analysis, discourse analysis may be
useful for some of your projects. Once again, the key is not to have
a lot of different methods but to have the ones that will give you a
good coverage of the information that you need.

4 Logistics and Planning

Use this section to achieve the following:

a. What are all the tasks that need to be completed? Be as

detailed as possible.

i. Examples include designing surveys, sampling, carrying

out surveys, interviews, processing data, library
research, drafting, writing reports, putting together the
presentation etc.

ii. Need to put forth SMART targets. Specific, Measurable,

Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound (if you can, esp for
major work)

b. Allocation of work. Who do what?

c. Timeline. You can use a Gantt Chart if you want. See sample
Gantt Chart on the last page. You can redo the Gantt Chart.
No need to squeeze everything in one page.

You should discuss about the possible manageability issues here for
your proposed timelines, targets and planning. It would be good to
think through all your planning carefully so as to ensure a smooth
carrying out of project later.
