programs that schools can successfully implement and maintain. Let's look at some
possibilities for your PE program.

Terrific! With a solid nutritional program and sufficient physical activity, students
acquire the habits of the Active & Healthy Program and can provide a positive
example to others.

Madison Rose Lane Elementary is a public Title 1 school located in a suburban area in the Madison
District and 50.35% of students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. As the start of the new school year,
there are currently 856 students enrolled with 37 students enrolled in Pre-K and 819 students in the K-4th grade.
The ethnic population of students in Rose Lane consists of 39.3% Hispanics, 36.3% Whites, 11.8% African
Americans, and 8.7% American Indians. As for the percentage of ELLs at Rose Lane, the office wasnt quite
sure the amount of ELL students currently enrolled as they are currently in the process of testing students. As of
2015, Madison Rose Lane attained a B-level status for academic success. (Madison, 2015)
Madison Rose Lane does an excellent job of providing students with healthier school meals that provide
students with the proper dosage of vitamin A, iron, calcium, and protein. As stated in their school website, all
foods available on campus must meet the Arizona Nutrition Standards (AZNS) (Home, 2015) In terms of
state actions, Madison Rose Lane is creating a great example of living a healthy lifestyle by providing healthier
and balanced meals for all its students. Appropriate snack times are given during the school day to increase
concentration and focus. During the morning, students are encouraged to take a snack break to regenerate their
energy. This is a great incentive in increasing academic achievement and student appreciation in the importance
of living a healthy lifestyle. The time allocated to recess and lunch is another important factor Rose Lane is
promoting for students wellbeing. Students have fifteen minutes of recess and are provided with effective
equipment to achieve a high-quality workout.
However, integration of physical education in the curriculum is seen as irrelevant when compared to
academic instruction. This is a personal observation I have observed at my site as more focus and time is paid to
getting students to learn the content due to the deadline quota being met. The importance of student growth on
the standardized test has been the main focus in academic instruction. As a result, educators do not have the
time to teach and implement physical education in the curriculum. The results from the School Assessment Tool
showcased a 20% percentage influence in the school curriculum focus. Meaning that we are not doing students

justice in promoting and letting them be aware of the impact and benefits of living a healthier lifestyle. As
educators, we must be positive role models and set examples of eating and making healthy choices that will
impact our students choices as well. Another weakness is the lack of communication with students and parents.
Walking through the campus I glare up to see empty white walls that with much effort can become filled with
positive messages in the importance of physical activity and education. Parents are a huge factor in the
wellbeing of their children, yet we seem to ignore this crucial bit of information. If parents are the key influence
in changing their childrens habits, why do we seem to look past this golden opportunity? In the School
Assessment Tool, only 40% of activity was achieved. As educators, we must keep in constant communication
with our students and parents in order to work as a team in the fight against obesity.
A policy that will help to improve the health and learning of all students is to provide students with 160
minutes of physical activity each week. Students at Rose Lane Elementary go to PE at least two times a week
for thirty minutes, this only means they are achieving 60 minutes of physical activity a week. As soon as the
week is over, we cannot guarantee that students will take action themselves and be physically active outside of
school; as such we must provide more physical activity not only in PE but in the classroom as well. Educators
must step up to the plate and dedicate twelve minutes of physical activity each week in the classroom by
providing brain breaks in between transitions. Also, increasing the time allocated to PE should be increased
from thirty minutes to forty-five minutes if students are only going twice a week. This will help ensure students
are meeting the 160-minute requirement of physical activity each week. This will thus increase their health and
make them become aware of the power of living a healthy and active lifestyle. Not only should students be up
and active they should also be acquired with the knowledge and education of quality nutrition. In this sense,
educators must stress the importance of nutrition by them themselves setting an example to their students.
Incorporating nutrition into the curriculum will be a great factor in promoting healthy and active choices.
Creating a community garden will help students become active participants in the road to a healthy life. They

will also become aware of healthy foods choices and can thus use the fruits and vegetables used in their garden
to give to the cafeteria.
Promoting physical activity in school can be accomplished by promoting various physical exercises such
as yoga, for example, to help students learn and take on diverse ranges of physical activities that will fit their
needs. Offering diverse physical classes such as yoga and kickboxing can thus help reduce students stress and
increase their physical activity in the process. Providing more quality equipment will also help to improve and
engage students interest to becoming more active. Teaming up with various health organizations can promote
and let students become aware of healthy foods. Allowing students to take field trips that support the education
of health and wellbeing such as visiting a local farm to see the process of gardening can have a great influence
and impact in students making healthier food choices. Also, informing parents through weekly newsletters twice
a week on various physical exercises and nutritious facts can help parents promote healthy behaviors and
attitudes in their children to arise. Informing parents of various after school activities and events will let them
become active participants in their students lives. Another important factor we can do as educators is to
promote healthy choices and influences throughout the school in this manner, students are exposed and aware of
living an active and healthy lifestyle. Creating a health and wellness club can help spread the importance of
being active and eating healthy to students all over campus. Students can have a section in the daily
announcements where they are able to state health fact, model fun and energetic physical exercises and discuss
ways to making healthier choices. When students are taking lead over their own health they will tend to make
an impact in their peers behavior and attitude as well.
The information discussed in this paper will be beneficial to my topic of discussion which showcases the
correlating factors of exercise and the effects it attains on brain functioning in children. Through my research, I
will investigate how the increase of physical exercise improves brain activity. Will increasing physical activity
in the classroom improve students attention span and academic achievement? It has been a proven determinant

that physical activity helps stimulate the brains function and helps students perform better in school. I will
measure these results by providing brain breaks throughout the day which will incite physical activity to be met
and observe students behavior and attitude as a result.
