    Field Test of a CDMA System Franz Knebelkamp, Dr. Bernd Eylert, Wilhelm Schiitters: DeTeMobil ‘Martin Chang, Klein Gilhousen: QUALCOMM INC. ‘Abstract: Feld tests of a CDMA based niobile radio system was conducted Jointly by DeTeMobll and ‘QUALCOMM, INC. in Minster, Germany. Tests were conducted in the 1.7 GHz frequency band, under a variety of conditions, including different terrains and vehicle speeds, as well as in both single cell and hand- off caverages. The performance of the system was ‘evaluated both subjectively using audio parameters, as ‘well objectively, using frame error rates. General system performance under different coverage situations are represented, together with an analysis of the performance of the system with respect ¢o both signal strength and vehicle speed. The indoor performance and interference characteristics of the fest aystem are also presented. Finally. the audio performance ofthe system is presented. 1, INTRODUCTION Field ust ofa code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular mobile system was con-ducted joinly by DBP Central “Office for Mobile Commusicatons (now: DeTeMobil, “a subsidy of DUP. Telekom) and QUALCOMM, an American manufacture and operator of communication systems, in Minster Germany. The kjecves ofthe st were to ioduce the aplication f the DS-CDMA/S? technology in mobile communications, to demonsrae the deuiled operaton of QUALCOMM's ‘CDMA system; to collect data in the 1.7 GHz froquency ‘band; and to provide an opportunity 1 observe, study and evaluate the performance ofthe sytem with respect 0 the ‘overage performance, reverse link power control, soft hand-off, variable rate vocoder, and the tolerance of ‘external’ interference.
