Course Description: Mathematics teaches students to solve problems, reason logically and fosters creativity
through abstract thinking. Although we study functions in detail, students practice applying rules and
following procedures which are skills applicable to most occupations or fields of study. It is strongly
recommended that students have passed both Algebra 2 and Geometry with a grade of C or better.
Semester 1 Topics: We will complete an in-depth study of several types of functions
including polynomial functions, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and
trigonometric functions.
Textbook: Blitzer: Precalculus, 5e. Students will access the text online and on their iPad.
Selective assignments, quizzes, and tests must be completed on the textbook website:
mymathlabforschool.com. Homework assignments will have a limited number of chances to
complete each problem.
Required Materials:
Notebook for notes, journal and homework. (Graph
would be best)
Graphing calculator (TI-83, TI-84, TI-Nspire)
Fully charged iPad (Consider buying a keyboard and
inexpensive stylus)

ruled

Canvas Website: All assignments will be posted in Canvas which has valuable tools including an
assignment calendar, links to class notes and much more. Many assignments will be submitted and graded in
Canvas, but the overall grade will be found in the Skyward Gradebook.
Student Notebooks:
Journal: Students complete 2-4 journal problems during the first 5 minutes of each class. Students are
expected to write the questions along with their answers so they can be studied.
Learning Targets: Learning targets summarize the objectives of each lesson. They are organized by chapter
on one page called the learning target sheet. Students reflect on their work regularly and complete a brief
summary/self-assessment for each learning target. At the end of each chapter, students will use this page to
write a summary of what they learned.
Notes: Students will be expected to take notes on topics discussed in class and what they read from the book.
Notes will be taken both in the notebook and on the iPad.
Homework: Homework will be given regularly and will be graded based on completion unless it is online
homework through the website. Answers are provided and students are encouraged to verify their answers.
Late homework will not be accepted after the exam.
Assessments: Exams will be given at the end of each chapter. Quizzes will be given and graded frequently to
monitor progress. All credit will be lost for cheating. Juniors will take the SBAC exam near the end of the
school year. ALL STUDENTS will take the same end of semester assessment whether they are enrolled for
CWU credit or not.
Retakes: All exams may be retaken with the following guidelines:
The highest possible grade that can be received on a retake is 90%
A retake form must be completed along with its specifications
Needs to be completed within one week of receiving the graded exam

Attendance Policy: Students should be in their seat and ready to learn when the bell rings. Notify the teacher
when they plan to be absent for an extended period of time. Late work will only be accepted for excused
