Ms. Emily Dressing
Senior Lecturer, Writing Program at Syracuse
Syracuse University
236 H.B. Crouse Hall
Syracuse, NY 13210
Dear Ms. Dressing,
I hope that you will consider me for a position in the Writing Program at SU as a
student enrolled in WRT 307.
I was particularly excited when I learned that there were spots open for your section
of WRT 307, as I am a big fan of your work outside the academic setting and have
heard good things about your teaching style. Additionally, your projects with Chase
Design as a copyrighter and research analyst and your submissions as a freelance
writer for various companies have been very impressive. If possible, I would love to
have an opportunity to work with you to cultivate my own understanding of genre,
audience, and rhetoric in order to communicate effectively in the workplace.
In order to develop a strong background in professional writing and rhetorical
studies, I have taken multiple classes offered by the Writing Program here on
campus. These included, one with a focus on making effective stylistic moves in an
academic setting and a course focused on methods of research writing as critical
inquiry. In addition, my current field of study, Health and Exercise Science,
emphasizes teamwork and accountability. However, Ive learned, that in order to be
successful when dealing with patients, I have to be able to assess a situation, act
accordingly, and have the skills necessary to communicate with team members. I
believe that my enrollment in WRT 307 will not only help me foster these type of
skills, but also, with my academic background, can help facilitate healthy class
discussions and promote a team mentality within my peers.
Furthermore, aside from my coursework, I have been part of ARISE, a program
designed to build leadership skills and promote community service in south Asian
communities. During my time at ARISE, we were taught how to disciple leaders in
our respective communities and inspire positive action among youth groups.
Similarly, I can use these skills and apply them to WRT 307 and help maintain class
productivity and engagement.
I believe that I have the skills and experience necessary for this position and I can
contribute greatly to the classroom setting and advance team objectives. Please
dont hesitate to contact me via e-mail or phone, both of which can be found at the
end of this letter. I look forward to speaking with you regarding this opportunity.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Erik Hernal
