Geothermal Packer Case Histories

1985 1996
This is the original Geothermal packer that CDI developed for a customer for use in the Bakersfield
California oilfields. It used a flexible graphite core sheathed in a FKM coated Aramid fabric. This concept
had also been supplied for many years on elements for 650F applications in India. The fabric covering
protected the element on the trip down hole and is considered sacrificial. Wire mesh end rings are used as
anti-extrusion devices.

1987 1996
This Geothermal packer was developed for a customer for use in the Bakersfield California oilfields. It
used a flexible graphite core sheathed in a FKM coated Aramid fabric. The customer uses copper cups on
the ends as anti-extrusion devices. Typical expected temperatures were 575 F.

1996 - Present
This packer started out as the original fabric wrapped element with wire mesh end rings. The application
was for a 2035 PSI, 635 F max. steam well on the side of a volcano. Setting force was limited to 90K,
testing found that the original fabric wrapped element would hold 1750 PSI at 635 F. Thus the assembly
was redesigned to incorporate dual graphite elements and a bias ring to aid in setting the packer. The
condition of the casing was rough and the coating of the graphite elements was changed to Geothermal
EPDM compound 104. Patented SinterMesh end rings were added to reduce the friction on the casing
walls and allow more setting force to be induced in to the assembly. As a result this assembly held 2035
PSI at 635 F with 90K pounds setting force. This has become CDIs standard design for new Geothermal
applications.
