The Gold Museum (El Museo del Oro)

There are more than 33,000 pieces of pre-Hispanic things


made of gold in the Gold Museum, Bogot, Colombia.
The Bank of the Republic bought the first piece of gold in
1939. The museum now contains the biggest collection in
the world. Each piece is beautiful, and the museum is an
unforgettable place to visit.

What to see
The famous Quimbaya poporo was the first piece in the
collection. Poporos are small containers which are used
for holding things. The design of the Quimbaya poporo
is simple and it looks like a modern object. However
it is actually 2,300 years old. It is a national symbol in
Colombia, and its used on coins and bank notes.

The Muiscas Golden Raft is a tiny boat made of gold


with figures on it. This small and incredibly beautiful
object comes from the Muisca culture of Colombia, which
existed 600 years ago. It represents an important tradition
in Indian culture. The famous story of El Dorado comes
from this tradition.

The Salon Dorado is a special room on the third floor of


the museum. 8,000 of the most important works of gold
in the museum are kept here. Two guards allow just a few
visitors at a time to enter. You walk inside, the heavy doors
close behind you, and then the lights come on. You are
surrounded by spectacular shining gold.

The man at the next table was eating something interesting.


I called the waiter, pointed, and made eating gestures to show
that I wanted the same thing. The waiter and the man at the
next table laughed and I felt happy. The waiter brought me
the food, a fruit juice and a bowl of water.
The meal was excellent. The man next to me was eating
with his right hand, so I did the same. When I needed to
wash my fingers, I used the small bowl of water. Immediately
the waiter came and brought me a new water bowl. This
happened several times. When it happened for the fifth time,
he put the bowl on my table with a bang.
I noticed that the man at the next table wasnt using the
water to wash his fingers he was drinking it. I felt very
stupid. I was sorry that the waiter was angry, but I didnt
know how to say that. I gave him some extra money when I
paid for my meal.
