In groups of 3-4 you are to create
a presentation outlining the
importance to Lent and the
events that take place during
Lent (Ash Wednesday, Good
Friday and Easter). You are to
draw on your understanding of
the symbols and actions for Lent
to support your explanation. You
may wish to present in the
following ways:
Powerpoint/oral presentation
Explanation using a poster (Oral)
Video presentation created on
iMovie
Free choice (to be checked by
Teacher).
Learning Episode 1
Learning intention: Today we are going
to find out what we know about the
liturgical season of Lent.
Children will be scaffolded on their prior
knowledge by use of questioning.
How long is Lent?
What events take place during Lent?
What are we celebrating during Lent?
What are some symbols of Lent?
Lesson concludes with students writing their
Lenten promise in a sealed envelope.

Assessment of learning:
The constructions of a KWHL
chart on what students know
about Lent.
Learning Episode 2
Learning Intention: Today we are
learning about the significance of Ash
Wednesday and the symbols associated
with the day. (May carry over two days).

Learning Intention: Today we are
learning about Good Friday and the
importance it holds for Lent.
Formative Assessment
Assessment for Learning:
Students create an illustration that
includes symbols and key words
about Lent. Illustration must
include the three events (Ash
Wednesday, Good Friday & Easter).
Through out the 4 Learning episodes the teacher may use a wide range of
formative assessments strategies to gain insight into students learning. The
Strategies suggested include:
KWHL Chart
Conferencing and making annotations
Reflection on students Work (illustration, work sheet).

Assessment as Learning:
Students may be required to reflect on what
they have learnt by restating what their
Lenten promise was and what they learnt
about The liturgical season of Lent.
Reflection is to include:
What they already knew
What they learned
What they found interesting
Have they stayed true to their
promise
