The artifact is research on an emerging technology: all-in learning.com for data collection. It was
completed for ITEC 7445 Multimedia and Web Design in Education. I researched and
recommended the adoption of all in learning as a way to collect and report standards-based data
for data teaming. The purpose in choosing all in learning was to allow for a quick and efficient
way for teachers to collect, analyze and report large amounts of data for collective analysis.
Madison County has been utilizing data teams since 2007 but the data collection and analysis
part is the slowest part of the process. It is an obstacle which is hard to overcome. The research
is presented in the form of a PowerPoint document. I looked at multiple advantages and benefits
to using all in learning as a new data analysis tool as well as the cost involved and potential
drawbacks. Since this presentation to the administration, we have adopted all in learning as a
data collection tool on a limited basis. We decided to adopt the campus program but not the
individual student response systems. This helped to limit the cost incurred initially so we can
continue to evaluate and research the tool while we use it this year. I was hesitant to
recommend the technology to the administration and now I realize that I should have spoken up
earlier. They were not aware technology like this even existed and were actively seeking ways to
make the data collection less time-consuming and more collaborative. This is something I need
to change. Since then, we have adopted several other new technologies, such as NewsELA.com
which are revolutinaizing our classrooms. It is important to risk rejection and recommend
researched technology. The worst they can say is no but if they approve, it might really impact
student achievement.
Through this research, I learned that data collection and reporting is an obstacle for many
schools. There are companies seeking to capitalize on this new data collection and many
different systems exist. In order to make the best financial decision for the school and faculty, it
is important to continue to research and evaluate these emerging technologies. All in learning
may be the best choice this year but that may change as new methods and systems emerge.
One of the goals in our school improvement plan is for data to drive our instructional decisions
to improve student achievement. Using this emerging technology could help us reach toward that
goal and utilize data more effectively. We could measure this by looking at data drive decisions
and how they are impacted by using a d
ata collection program. We can also look at student achievement data to see that it increases with
the use of data drive interventions.
