Charles Babbage and the Pre-Computer

Age
Before the Computer was first invented, there were
still many advancements in the field of computers that
led up to the creation of computers.
The most widely-used machine at the moment was the
calculator, but it was slow and working with it was
very difficult.
Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was born in Walworth, Surrey,

on December 26, 1791. He was the first one to actually come
up with the concept of fully automatic computing engines,
although he did not create one physically himself. He did,
though, create the Difference Engine.

First Generation of Computers

This time period lasted from about
1946 up to 1955
The main focus on the machines from
this generation was the Vacuum Tube
The most important machine created
was the ENIAC, completed in 1946, and
was used to solve numerical problems.
Problems with this period include the
machines being very costly, nonportable, unreliable.
The first British computer was the
EDSAC, a similar version of the ENIAC;
EDSAC was presented in 1949

Second Generation of Computers

This generation can be dated from about
1955 until 1965
The unit on which this generation relied
upon was the Transistor.
These computers also were starting to get
smaller in size.
An innovation that this generation had was
the increase in commercial use that these
computers had.

This made computers in this generation more

portable too.

IBM was one of the main companies that

changed their style into transistor-based
computers, presenting a computer with
over 2000 transistors.

Third Generation of Computers

This generation is dated from about 1965
to 1971; this is one of the shortest
generations.
Computers in these years began
implementing integrated circuits for the
first time.
The computers in this period were even
smaller in size.
These computers began using fans for
releasing heat.
Some of the most important
characteristics of these computers include
the lower amount of energy they required
to function and the greater amount of
storage capacity they had

Fourth Generation of Computers

The generation lasted from about 1971
until 1980 and has in it major changes
for todays society
The innovation in development of the
computer consisted on a basis of the
VLSI Micro-Compressor
They had a more powerful operating
system.
Computers in this time period had a
totally general purpose and were
available now for everybody.
The processing power these computers
had was significantly greater.

Fifth Generation of Computers

This generation began in about 1980 and today
we are living through this same generation.
The main features of these eras include the ULSI
Micro-Compressor and the development of
Microchips.
Another special characteristic is the AI systems,
or Artificial Intelligence.
Many computers and phones today function with
voice recognition, even some houses have
begun using this technology.
Quantum computing began in this era and has
become a wide trend
Nanotechnology has been developed and is even
used for military purposes.
Computer availability is massive in the current
days for almost everybody on Earth.

Oct. 28, 1955, in Seattle,
Washington.
Attended Harvard in
1973, where he took
high level math and
computer sciences
courses.
