Prompt for ED 201 Lesson Self-Assessment

Name: Noor Kheirieh

Lesson Topic: Homophones
Date Observed: October 14th, 2013
School/Grade Level/Number of Students Taught: Manitoba, 6th and 7th grade, 4
students
Cooperating Teacher Name: Kim Shields
Planning and Preparation:
How did your lesson design reflect what actually happened in the lesson? What did/would you
have changed? Were you able to teach the lesson in the allotted time? Why or why not? Were
your lesson objectives clearly stated and describe what your students actually learned?
My lesson design reflected what actually happened well. The parts I cut out were segments that
were shown on the final lesson design. I would have changed the level of difficulty of my review.
It seemed like it was almost too easy for the students. It was a review though so I am happy it was
easy for them. I was able to teach the lesson in the allotted time because I had already planned out
how long I would spend on each activity. My lesson objectives were clearly stated. I asked the
students in the end if the review was beneficial and they all said it was.
Learning Environment:
How did you encourage student participation and elicit responses from all students? What
strategies did you use to manage and monitor student behavior? How did you engage them in
responding to you and each other?
I required each student to answer questions when it came to the PowerPoint. They all had to give
me an example of a homophone. When it came to the worksheet I had each student take turns
answering the questions. For the iPad activity each student was given multiple turns. I used the
withitness strategy. I scanned the group during the activities to ensure they were all doing what
they were told. I engaged them in responding to their classmates and myself by showing my
appreciation by saying good job.
Classroom Instruction:
What strategies and/or procedures did you use to assist students in learning the lesson content?
How effective were those strategies/procedures in helping students learn? What changes or
adjustments did you need to make during the lesson?
I engaged the students by doing activities I thought they would enjoy. I also allowed them to work
together so they can help one another with understanding the lesson content. These procedures
were very effective because the students did assist one another and the review was helpful to
them. During the lesson I had to make the iPad game shorter than anticipated because the
worksheet doing longer than I expected it would.
Assessment:
How did you know if the students learned what you taught them? What did you learn from
listening to student responses, examining their work or observing their interactions? How well
did your assessments connect to the lesson objectives?

I knew the students learned what I taught them based on if they answered the questions on the
worksheet correctly. I also knew if they answered the iPad questions correctly. I learned from
student responses that they knew a lot about homophones already. By examining their work I
noticed that they knew the difference for all the homophones for the most part but just had a hard
time spelling the correct homophone. Based off of their interactions I noticed they typically dont
like to work together, and they all finished at different paces. My assessment connected well with
my lesson plan because it was a final way to see if they all understood homophones if they knew
which homophone is to be used in the sentence.

Professional Responsibilities:
How did you seek feedback from your cooperating teacher? What did you learn from his/her
feedback and how did you apply it to your lesson?
I received feedback from my CT before I gave the lesson. I told her what I planned on doing and
she told me it was a good idea and gave me an idea of doing a review before I started the
activities. This helped me come up with the idea of starting the lesson with a PowerPoint.
Reflection:
What did you learn about teaching, student learning and assessing from this lesson? How would
you use what you learned for future instructional experiences? Based on this lesson, what
Wisconsin Teaching Standard represents your area of greatest growth this semester? What
standard represents an area of further development for you? Why?
I learned that I was actually not as nervous about teaching as I thought I would be. I learned that
all students truly learn at different paces. They also work at different paces and just because they
take longer to complete a task doesnt mean they dont understand it. I learned from assessing that
the students prefer a fun way to assess and this way they are relaxed about it because they dont
view it as a test. I will use this to make sure I incorporate more activity time than lecture time.
Based off of the Wisconsin Teaching Standard my area of growth is realizing students learn
differently. I now realize there are many methods of teaching and many different students who
prefer different ways. My area of development would be communicating with other teachers
because I didnt really communicate with my CT afterwards about teaching. I told her it went
well but didnt tell her what occurred.
