THE BRAIN

Receptive to environmental
influences

Education plays major role in

development of brain.
Variety of teaching strategies
help develop all areas of the
brain.

SENSORY AND
LONG-TERM
MEMORY

Some instances where more

focused attention will not help
a student understand the
material better (such as if
they know very few terms that
are being used in the lesson).

The 5 senses are used daily in

everyday life and
incorporating them into a
lesson helps students further
understand the world.

Examples: labeling different

items in the classroom for
kindergarteners or showing a
film on the topic at hand for
any grade level. This will
stimulate a few of the 5
senses at once.

Analysis, creativity,
imagination, arts, and
many more.
Lessons based on facts, logic or
analyzing situations pertains
more to the left side of the
brain.
Lessons based on creativity,
imagination and feelings
pertains more to the right side
of the brain.

SENSORY MEMORY
5 senses are transformed into

something we can make sense

of.
Perception: stage where
incoming information is
analyzed and assembled into
something with meaning.
Ex: being able to read other
peoples handwriting. If any
markings resemble that of the
letters of the alphabet our
brains automatically recognize

LONG-TERM MEMORY
Holds the information that is
well learned (your phone
number) and information can
remain in long-term memory
permanently.

Declarative knowledge:
knowledge declared through
words/symbols. Procedural
Knowledge: knowing how to
do something. Self-regulatory
Knowledge: knowing how to

3 stages within implicit

memoryclassical
conditioning (what makes
you feel anxious when you
take an exam), procedural
memory (for skills, habits
and how to perform tasks),
and priming (activating
information that is already
stored in long-term memory).
Why is it important for
educators to have knowledge on
long-term memory?
Many different teaching
strategies that encourage
student engagement and
higher levels of initial
learning are associated with
longer retention. Ex: frequent
reviews, elaborated
feedback, high standards
and active involvement in
learning projects.
