Differentiating Instruction
Instruction in the past has mostly been the teacher standing in front of the class and lecturing,
handing out worksheets, tests and the occasional state assessments. Today, things are very
different in the classroom. There is so much technology in the world that has permeated into
class room by way of the students bringing their own devices, whether permitted by the school or
not. By recognizing that students have different ways of learning, a teacher can assess, adjust
individualize lessons for each student.
(IPad or Tablet): Todays classroom are much different from twenty years ago, in that
students have access to information and research material by accessing the internet. Teachers can
use the internet to find lesson plans, videos, and worksheets to help assist in teaching students
lessons they would not be interested in learning if taught by old school methods. There are also
web sites to help assess students that pin point certain factors to determine the best way a student
a student can learn. Using an IPad or tablet gives a student a mobile means of learning that can
be applied to any subject and keeps a child engaged and interested in learning, which is basically
what every teacher and administrator hopes to instill in all students.

(Smartboard): A Smartboard is a wonderful piece of technology that does keep kids engaged
and interested in every subject. A teacher can hook up to it and broadcast their computer screen
to it to show videos, notes and have the kids participate in lessons by coming up to the front of
the class to write or solve mathematical problems on the board. The Smartboard is the equivalent
of the old schoolhouse chalk board, only one cannot project videos and text for lessons onto it.
Visual learners can remain involved in the lesson by the visual stimulation while at the same
time keeping auditory learners listening and paying attention to the background music, if
provided by the teacher. All at the same time tactile learners can approach the board and have
hands-on experience by writing and / or dropping and dragging items to the appropriate box.
This piece of technology may be the best one for use in the classroom.
(Flipped classroom): The flipped classroom method seems to keep a students mind on
studying at all and or different times of the day, which in turn may permit a deeper understanding
of the material being taught. The teacher may have a teacher web page that the students can
access to pick up tips, tutoring services, extra credit work and videos that can help them absorb
study material a little better. By doing this a teacher can focus classroom time on other aspects of
teaching such as labs, reading aloud, and more in deep explanation of the material.
In a final look at the application of technology and differentiating instruction in the classroom
it seems they are a perfect companions in the task of giving each student exactly what they may
need to be successful in the classroom and in the relevant real world. With a Bring Your Own
Device (BYOD), a school district can save money while at the same time giving students access
to an entire world of information at their finger tips.
