Warm-up Activity: Preposition Bee (5 minutes)

Purpose: To remind students of the use of preposition words.
Procedure:
- Greet the class. Give out the handouts.

- Ask a visiting scholar to read a sentence on the PowerPoint that have omitted the preposition(s)
(e.g.: The plane is flying _____ the cloud.) and give his or her answer for the blank. There will
be pictures demonstrating the meaning of the sentence.
- The rest of the students need to decide the answer is right or not, if not, they need to correct it.
Note that several answers will probably be possible.
- Alternate visiting scholars until four sentences are completed.
Transition: Show the pictures to the students once again on PowerPoint. Briefly introduce
different ways of describing the pictures and ask students to come up with additional description.
Because in the next activity, instructor will show different maps to introduce the words and
phrases will be taught today. Therefore, if any student came up with the words or phrases will be
taught, instructor will write them down on the board.

Activity 1: Common Ways (20 minutes)

Purpose: To introduce students the standard way to open and close a discourse politely and
introduce common ways and words/phrases people will use in asking for directions and give
directions.
Procedure:
- Ask students how they will begin a request for directions. Then introduce common greeting
phrases on PowerPoint and ask students to repeat the pronunciation after the instructor. Instructor
will also briefly introduce how to use the phrase Excuse me to help ourselves get out of
embarrassing situations while traveling in English speaking countries.
- Introduce the way how to get to a specific place using the phrase Could you please tell me
how to get to _____? as well as the way to find a specific type of place using the phrase Where
is the closest _____?
- Introduce common ways how to thank people who offered help using phrases like I appreciate
your help. Have a good day. You are a lifesaver. etc.
- By showing maps and points (on PowerPoint and handouts), introduce nouns (block, plaza,
intersection, connection, entrance, and exit), prepositional phrases (on the corner of, take a
left/right, close to, and straight ahead) that are commonly used when people are asking for
directions or explaining directions. Ask students to repeat the pronunciation after the instructor.
Then instructor will come up with few more words/phrases that are commonly used words or
phrases when they ask for directions to encourage students to come up with additional ones.
Transition: Review the words and phrases and ask students to repeat the pronunciation after the
instructor. Notify students to pay attention to how will the prepositional phrases be used in the
upcoming activity.

Activity 2: Label the Map (15 minutes)

Purpose: To develop and improve students ability to comprehend directing instructions as well
as their sense of direction and space throughout practicing.
Procedure:
- The instructor will give out copies of a map called Rosewood House and Gardens. After
explaining the rule of this activity (listen and label the names of the corresponding buildings on
the map according to the sound track), the class will be divide into groups of three or four and
students will listen to a clip of certain sound track and label the buildings. Names of the
buildings will be given in a random order under the map to help students to fill in the blanks.
- While students are listening to the sound track, instructor will draw a same map on the board.
After finishing listening to the sound track, each group will present one student to go to the board
and write down their answers. The rest of the class will discuss about the answers and correct
them.
- Instructor reveals the answer and replay the sound track one more time. Students will get text
copies of the sound track.
Transition: While listening to the sound track, instructor can stop at the point and repeat where
students have difficulty understanding the meaning. Assure that students have the ability to use a
map in English and inform them that they will be using a real-life map closely related to their life
in the next activity. Let the students guess which place it will be.

Activity 3: Map Search (15 minutes)

Purpose: Students will become more familiar will Colorado State University as well as become
more competent to get to places with a polite manner (which increases the possibility of being
helped) in unfamiliar cities.
Procedure:
- Visiting scholars and grad students will get into pairs, and each pair will get a map of Colorado
State University. Meanwhile, instructor will introduce a CSU map searching function from
http://maps.colostate.edu/.
- Instructor will give each group a note with a starting point, a destination and a mission within a
scenario to be completed (e.g.: New semester starts, need to go to Lory Student Center from
Clark Building to buy a textbook.). Visiting scholars need to use the words/phrases/sentences that
are taught in this lesson to open and close a dialogue correctly and appropriately. Grad students
need to answer the questions and point out the direction to the destinations.
- Each pair will step to the front of the class and present their dialogues. While one of the group
member (grad student) is explaining the directions, the other group member (visiting scholar)
needs to point out the rout for the rest of the class on the map.

Transition: Ask students if they are more familiar with Colorado State University and see if they
have any other questions. Ask students to talk about their feeling of being in an unfamiliar city
and let them imagine what would it feel like if they go to the same place next time.

Activity 4: Idiom of the Day (5 minutes)

Purpose: To help students relax from the activities above and know a bit more about the culture.

and introduce the idiom Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
- Explain the meaning and introduce the history of the idiom.
- Ask two graduate students who are native English speakers to give an example of how the
idiom is used.

question about the class. And thank the audience for their time and patience.

Now, please look at the map Ive given you of the house and gardens. We are here at the
Information Center. Follow the path marked with the arrow and the first area you come to is the
orchard on your left.
As you go further down the path, there is the kitchen garden on the right and as you go round the
first sharp corner you will find, to your left, an area where different types of pear tree have been
planted as well as some lovely flowers, and this is known as Pear Alley designed by George
himself.
Next to this is the green house where some exotic plants and fruits are grown. Follow the path
round the second corner and on your right you will see the entrance to the Mulberry Garden with
its 500-year-old tree. Past the Mulberry Garden, follow the path until you reach the front of the
house. I suggest you spend a good hour wandering this lovely building.
If you would like to purchase any of Georges books or other souvenirs, then leave the house by
the side entrance, where you will find our shop, which is situated between the house and the
garage which contains the magnificent old Rolls-Royce car which used to belong to George. I
expect by this time you may also be in need of a rest and some refreshment. Most visitors are, so
why dont you visit the tea room on the far side of the garage?
