Sarak English Faculty Meeting monday 25 may, ubrary 1. ACARA update: latest draft curriculum for 2016. 2. Common assessment tasks in 8—10 English. Year 8: Essay (focus on theme); and Narrative Year 9: Essay (focus on theme); and Persuasive text Year 10: Essay (focus on theme & stylistic features); and Critical Reading In the second semester of this year, we will all complete an essay as a common assessment task, and forward a typical ‘A, ‘8’, and ‘C’ grade from each class. At an English meeting, we can determine which essay at each year level best represents each grade band, and use the best ‘A’ and ‘B’ as ‘exemplars next year. | have the year 9 and 10 task for your perusal tonight, and I will complete the year 8 task over the holidays. (If anyone has a current year & class, and is writing an essay, it would bbe good to use one of the responses as an exemplar!) N.B. During third term, | wll organise the assessment materials for the other tasks (narrative and. persuasive) that we will use next year. 3. Possible prompts for area in which to improve in school reports: 1. Proofread written work by reading aloud each sentence before submitting for assessment. 2. Keep a spelling list of commonly misspelled words. 3. Focus upon writing grammatically correct sentences by avoiding comma splices. 4. Read for at least twenty minutes most evenings of the week 5. Watch interesting film texts and read widely from different text types. 6. Carefully plan responses before writing good copies of work. 7. Meet deadlines for drafting and conferencing to allow for teacher feedback 8. Use class time effectively to reduce competing homework demands. 9. Learn the nomenclature of stylistic features. 10. Learn to embed more fluently quotations within sentences. 41, Ensure assignments are closely modelled on student exemplars. 12. Use the holiday break to ensure all assignments are correctly labelled and presented for SACE Board central moderation, 13. Consider attending Writers’ Group to seek extension in this subject. 14. Consider attending Book Club to seek extension in this subject. 15. Put in place strategies to improve handwriting skills. 16. Sit next to peers whose work ethic you admire and respect. 17. Check for understanding if you find some concepts difficult to understand, 18. Remember to use the full suite of editing tools on Microsoft Word. 19. Use the practice of speed writing to commence creative writing tasks, 20. Ask peers and family members to provide feedback onthe clarity of your writing, 21. Compile a lst from your teacher's feedback of common errors to fine-tune your writing, 22. Make sure you develop a better understanding of how to use apostrophes correctly, 23, Use your diary and check the D2L calendar and news updates to improve your general organisation,
