ESTIMATED LESSON LENGTH:

OVERVIEW OF LESSON:
Students will divide into groups. Each group will work with either the classroom teacher or the
librarian. Using some form of manipulative, the books will be read out loud with each group with
special emphasis being placed on the letter being explained.
Students will trace letters and also color pictures corresponding with those letters. This will
eventually become a classroom book.
Students will also have to take an oral test to ensure comprehension.

TEACHER WILL
- Create template to be used in
creation of class book
- Read book to part of class
- Administer oral test

LIBRARIAN WILL
- Curate a collection of books suitable to
teaching kindergartners upper and lowercase
letters
- Read book to part of class
- Administer oral test

FINAL PRODUCT/LEARNING OUTCOME:


Students will produce a Virginia-based classroom letter book. Students will learn upper and
lowercase letters as well.
ASSESSMENTProduct:
Students will accurately create their page of the class book.
Students will accurately recognize both upper and lower case letters in an oral test

ASSESSMENTProcess:
Students will be asked to recognize upper and lowercase letters.

Student Self-ASSESSMENT:
Students will present their page to the class.

STRATEGIES FOR REMEDIATION:


Students who do not demonstrate a firm grasp of upper and lowercase letters will work with the
teacher and/or librarian.

Direct Instruction:
The teacher will read an alphabet book with the class.

Modeling and Guided Practice:


The students will recite alphabet with teacher.
The student will create a page for the class alphabet book.

Independent Practice:
Students will demonstrate retention of learning through an oral test of upper and lowercase
letters

Sharing and Reflecting:


Students will share their page with the class.
Students and teacher will read their class book together to reinforce learning

Strategies for Differentiation:


Teacher and librarian will work with case managers to differentiate instruction as needed.
