Invigilating and Covering

(Oct 2nd 6th 2014)

New experiences are gained through the weeks and this week had
different experiences. I was asked to cover classes and invigilate
exams to be more aware of their techniques.
Covering classes was a very effective involvement for me because I
have learned new things and techniques. For example, I have never
done the attendance, so I had to learn how to do it. Before covering
classes, my mentor showed me how to do the attendance and how I
can deal with different situations. This will help me in the future since I
became more aware of covering and how I can handle different
conditions with the absence of the class teacher. The teacher assigned
some materials for students to work on and some of them asked me to
check their paragraphs for mistakes. I think it was beneficial because I
tried to raise learners awareness towards self-editing by underlining
the mistakes and they had to correct them. The most important value
that I have gained from this experience is that I should help my
colleagues in emergencies and in turn I will find help when I need.
Invigilating was another experience that I have gone through this
week. I helped my mentor invigilating foundation students level 3 and
she presented me the different techniques used. One of the techniques
was dividing the class into two groups because the teacher wanted to
have more focus and control on the students. Before starting the test,
the teacher ensured that students cleared their desks as well as she
checked the seating arrangement. What I have learnt from this
experience is that some learners may be slow or I may have problems
with the technology, so I need to be always quick in my reactions to
save time.
To sum up, teachers should help their colleagues in different ways and
this can be through covering or invigilating. It is not only beneficial for

our colleagues, but it is also a benefit for ourselves to be exposed to

various situations and difficulties to know how to deal with them.
